Over Encumbered - Not So Bad...

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 2:33 am

Hello all, Happy New Year.

I recently found Labrynthian (excuse spelling), and found myself to be over encumbered when picking up four magical staff's (staves?). I entered a quest through a maze and found that being over encumbered forced me to walk the maze which I actually found to be much more interesting as I noticed nice little detail in the graphics and it just felt right to walk the maze rather than run through it.

I did notice something and I dont know if you have noticed this too, whilst being over encumbered I found that walking with my Bow drawn and aiming actually sped my walk speed up a bit which helped. I dont think it works with swords etc though.

******* POSSIBLE SPOILER BELOW***********

Well, I hate going slow, but at least you can move about when overencumbered.

I've done a bit of exploring and questing before going back to town by using a horse with this. I go into a cave, kill everyone. Clear it out backwards, get on my horse, go to the next point, then dump everything into the first container or body I come across. If it isn't near the entrance, then I use a body and move it near the entrance. Then I go through it without worrying about loot until the end. Works pretty well the vast majority of the time.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they just got rid of encumbrance. Or made it optional. I don't really feel like it adds a lot to the gameplay, imho. There's no balance reason for it as far as I am aware. Seems to add more tedium than anything else. I know there would be many that feel different though.

To me encumberance is crucial. I actually enjoy having to decide what to keep and what to leave behind. Simply being able to carry everything would completely ruin a lot of the experience of the game for me.

I almost always walk/sneak through dungeons even with my warrior characters. Nothing gets you killed faster than charging into a room or running across an unseen pressure plate.

When I get over-encumbered I drop my heaviest item then pick it up using the move button then just run around with it.

One time I did load up one of those physic active carts with all kinds of heavy weapons and armor that I couldn't carry and tried pushing it to town. If they had done the physic better it might have worked, but stuff just kept flying out of it if you bumped it too hard.

To me, Encumberance in Skyrim makes no sense, it's rather restricted in Skyrim compared to Oblivion/Morrowind (I'm surprised that with all this "Streamlining" BS that Bethesda didn't just remove carryweight entirely)

My biggest issue with it in Skyrim is the fact Stealth/Thief characters end up with by far the highest Carryweight in the game, due to certain perks and Thieves Guild armor, now... last I checked, being a massive Heavy Armor wearing badass with the physical strength to punch someone's head off, should (In theory) suggest that I can carry more stuff than a quick thief who has the physical durability of a blade of grass, however this is not the case in Skyrim, as seen when my Thief had just on 600 Carryweight VS my Warrior's 350 or so.

You can carry everything though. Slightly modify how you do things and you carry everything, especially once you get a horse (since you can ALWAYS fast travel when mounted). Encumbrance just slows things down for me.

Its a playstyle difference. I never have had a horse and I don't fast travel. I used to bring along a companion to wait outside a dungeon, but babysitting them really kills the enjoyment of the game too.

Well, whether you decide to use fast travel or not is irrelevant really. A horse ignores all weight and it is easier to manage than a companion -- personally I decided to stop using companions since they make the game too easy at least at my current level (with the difficulty on Master).

I`m going to be a stick in the mud....

I like how you`re forced to move slow if encumbered and being a NO FT person I have literally walked for 30 minutes to get stuff back I want to sell...

But I would`ve like it if at some point you were simply forced to stop. I`ve carried a lot of stuff, especially as a student, but there`s always a point when I simply could not move any more, no matter how much I want to.

Encumbrance is fine. But there's just one thing - you should be able to ride carriages when overencumbered! Has this been fixed by any patch yet?

You can get 1000 carryweight with Assasin/Thief while trying to make the character better.
