Over the shoulder....

Post » Mon May 06, 2013 11:44 pm

Judging from the screenshots, the game looks like it's gonna be in over-the-shoulder view, which is OK but I'm confused as to why no one does survival horror in first person. It can be infinitely more scary and immersive. What do you think?

Oh and why is this forum dead already?

How many people know it exists right now? Gstaff opened the forum and made the first post at "Posted Today, 07:38 AM". Where I am, in the same time zone as Bethesda, it is 9:08 AM.

I'd give it some time for people to find out the forum is here. Not to mention find out about the game, whatever that might be. I have no idea right now; only that I was looking at the new forum section.

Wasn't there that 360 game that was in first-person? Something about beating up crazy homeless people with pipes (I can't remember the name.) I can see the appeal of a first-person horror game, but I always prefer third person myself (I have trouble with spiral staircases and doorways in first-person.)
Give it some time, it's only been up for a couple of hours. Took me this long to even notice there was a new sub-forum for the game.

I'm pretty sure that game was called "Condemned".
And doesn't Amnesia: The Dark Descent count as survival horror? And Penumbra? Both are first-person.

Also, this forum hasn't been up for very long. Just give it time...

It just launched. It's 3 PM here and morning in America, people are at work/school. Like everybody said, give it time.

Yeah. I tried Amnesia, it scared me to death and I immediately remembered why I don't play horror games But its first person view worked very well and added to the atmosphere. I don't believe it would be quite the same experience if I wasn't limited to the FPP - my viewing cone was naturally a bit narrower, so it was all the more important to pay attention to every sound because I couldn't react as fast as I'd be able to in TPP.

Nop, but I did just watch some gameplay and I think I'm gonna buy it. Thanks for telling me about it!

Oh and your character even has a shadow! I don't think I ever saw that in first person games before, or I just never notice them.

Honestly I think over the shoulder is creepier. You always feel like something is behind you. You feel exposed. Deadspace did this well.

I was hoping to be the first to the punch but Amnesia: The Dark Descent was first person and I can't see why Amnesia: Machine For Pigs wouldn't also be. I'm not sure if it's more scary but It does, I think, put you in a different position mentally that in a third person perspective; you are the person who has this crazy £%& happening to them and not being reminded that you're playing this character who is dealing with this stuff.
FPS horror is far from a dead horse. F.E.A.R is FPS also, is it not?

We have no reason to care about whatever this is until they provide us with reason to care about whatever this is.
They haven't, thus we all stick to our Fallout and TES homes.

well FPV are all good and all, but they are far from immersive, at least to me.

& that's the thing you get people saying FPV is immersive, I don't see it that way, a floating hands + a silent characters = breaking of immersion to me, I feel like I am totally not in the game.

Meanwhile others like me see TPV as far more immersive, you see a character that you relate to, or in my case impose, (you) he is talking so the game feels alive, I feel in the game, and actually care about the character and what is happening.

Truth be told I would have been so disappointed if The Evil Within was a FPV game, every single indie horror game is FPV (Amensia, Slender, ...........etc), I am glad we still got TPV.

That doesn't make you feel like you're in the game at all lol, makes you feel like the character is in the game, and you're following along simply seeing the story unfold.

But I agree it's great the game will be third person as the game will probably be story-oriented anyway. Dead Space did a great job with third person and still was frightening.

BTW, there are FPV games where you can see your body, floating hands have nothing to do with FPV. Generally developers don't put a body because it gets in the way and annoying, especially when you want to pick a small object from the ground

I don't know about others who enjoy TPV, so I am talking about myself here, you see I know I can never be any of these people, and to be honest I can't cast myself in such situations, so when I play a game I become the character itself, I am no longer Sameer but in this case Sebastien, now imagine me being in a silent character

to be honest I think my issue with FPV is less about the floating hands and more about Silent Characters, I just can't stand silent characters, hence why I feel Corvo in Dishonored was a wasted character even though I liked him alot and liked the game ALOT as well.

DS1 was one of the VERY few games where the character was silent and I was so engaged in it, it actually didn't bother me, but these games are few, aaaah the memories, DS1 really started strong and went down so fast

@Sameer.Fisher I get what you mean, "becoming" the character and whatnot. Just a matter of taste then.

I personally can't feel like it's me when there's clearly a character blocking my screen, and it's clearly not me Not to mention virtual reality is the next step to immersion (bless the Oculus Rift), and third person would just be downright silly in that, you'd feel like a god looking down on the character, wouldn't feel like you're the character at all... again lol

I'd wish this game offered a choice - first person or third person. For me, third person view cannot possibly be immersive. That's why I stopped playing Dead Space after a few hours and never got back to it, the same with Risen, Witcher, Gothic 1, Tomb Raider, Gears of War, etc. I simply can't play these because I see some weird character before my eyes all the time (or on the left side of the screen, effectively covering the left side making it hard to notice something is eating my character's left arm off ).

There are first person perspective games in which the playable character talks a lot (a recent example would be Bioshock Infinite) and third person games where he/she doesn't (Dead Space), so I don't agree with Sameer.Fisher completely (floating hands + silent characters as immersion breakers).

The Oculus Rift is a good example: with virtual reality becoming so popular (well, mostly among developers and journalists so far ), what will happen to third person perspective games? They will become unplayable. But... I bet there will be people who would enjoy such a thing for whatever reason, lol.

So: dear developers, if you are making this game in third person view... add a first person view as a choice in the menu.

@ http://www.gamesas.com/user/836406-jack-bauer-24/: DS1 = Dead Space 1

@http://www.gamesas.com/user/660543-vynzent/: I am old skool, not really into ocular reality, projection on walls, kinect, using my body, and all that, I just want a controller in my hand and a TPV game

@ http://www.gamesas.com/user/648875-relu84/: you are really missing alot of great games you know that ?!, also if these games were FPV they wouldn't be as good IMO

There other cases where character talks in FPV yes, but they are so few, hence why Far Cry 3 & Resistance are my favorite when it comes to FPS, but other titles are meeeeh, I really can't stand silent characters at all, being ordered around, following someone through a set path, being a shell in a game, this isn't immersion to me

Also TPV games are not going any where, there is a huge market for them, no one would want GTA as FPV game, there are you alot of people who like to see the car when playing racing games, you can't have a hack n slash game in FPV (it won't be the same anyway), and games like Assassin's Creed, Metal Gear Solid, and tons more, TPV is great and will never go away.

Yeah, I know there are great third person perspective games and I do feel like I'm missing a lot of great gameplay. I guess it's a matter of preference, but I simply cannot play them. In The Witcher 2, in narrow areas, sometimes the camera becomes first person because it would be impossible to fit the character's model and see anything. That's when I stop playing, because I notice how much better the game would be with that kind of view. That's why I love Bethesda Game Studios games - TES and Fallouts give me the option. Players who prefer third person mode can change to that kind of view and be happy. I can play them in first person and really enjoy them.

Back in the ages of 8-bit Nintendo and Commodore 64 I was wondering if it would be possible to make such graphics to allow looking at the game world through the eyes of the player character. Then I saw a review of Wolfenstein 3D in a magazine. A few months later, I played Doom on a friend's PC and everything was clear: these are the games for me.

In racing games, I always look for a key that changes the view into the cockpit view. Rarely racing games without such a view are fun for me. Flight simulators, even with an arcade flight model, must have cockpit view. I was very happy to see that implemented in HAWX, although I haven't played it (yet). I would also *love* a GTA game with first person view. The graphics there are great, the city looks like it's alive - I would very much enjoy becoming a part of that world. It's not possible for me in third person view.

So... yeah, I get it that there are gamers who prefer third person view - I don't understand them, but I get it I would love The Evil Within in first person perspective. If there is an option to switch between views, this might be a game I shall buy. If there is only third person view, I will pass. Can't risk buying a game I will quite playing after 30 minutes. If there will be a demo version, I will give it a try. Otherwise, I'll just wait for Fallout 4, Half-Life 3 and Doom 4

I'll play this game despite the third person. I feel that different games need different views be it first person or third person.

As I said before, this game will most likely be, like Resident Evil, about having story and lots of dialogue and a character who will talk and express himself and that totally breaks real immersion but third person isn't about real immersion anyway, that's what first person was designed for.
I just want to play an awesome old school survival horror like the good old day and I can't wait for this game

LOL, and while I also would prefer FP, I can't stand racing games in FP, it doesn't feel nearly as great as TP to me and hence why I love Need for Speed
