Overclocking GTX 580 - Help needed!

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 1:45 pm

Hi,

I have a ASUS GTX 580 DirectCU II. The full specs can be found on the ASUS website; http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/NVIDIA_Series/ENGTX580_DCII2DIS1536MD5/#specifications. I would like to overlock my GPU because it can only help and to increase performance in other games as well. I have already overclocked my 15-2500k from 3.3Ghz to 4.3Ghz a couple of months ago and got a 11fps increase in Skyrim.

I have no experience in overclocking GPUs and any help would be appreciated. At the moment the Engine clock (stock) is 782 which is really low apparently as I've seen lower cards in the 500 series with 900mhz.These are my questions;

1) What is a safe overclock for my GPU without running tests and changing voltage?

2) What could I push it to and how would I test it? I don't like the though of changing voltages as it could destory my card.

3) Can you increase vram? Mines 1536mb and with texture mods I'm always maxing it outdoors according to MSI OSD.

I have looked for guides but cannot find a good guide for my card in particular thats for dummies.

Thank you

:smile:

There are good resources here: http://www.overclock.net/f/69/nvidia

- Don't go by other people's numbers...each gpu is unique; cooling conditions are unique; people lie;
- do it slowly, testing each increment
- look into flashing your gpu bios
- get a good load-test program like OCCT or furmark (OCCT is my preference, but there are many)

1. There is no such thing as a safe overclocking without doing testing.

2. Only testing will tell how high you can push it. as mentioned, OCCT and furmark are popular testing tools, http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ is another popular one (and you can use it with Nvidia cards, despite the misleading title)

3. You cannot add more VRAM to a dedicated card.

Your computer sounds pretty high spec. I don't see a reason to overclock at this stage in the game. Just turn down the anti aliasing a bit.

In my experience there is little to no gain worth the GPU overclock on any modern game I've seen. Given the system is just a single
monitor running at no more than 1920x1280. I can't see any need at all to fuzz with that with this game, given it doesnt' even
begin to strain at the seams (see specs below).

At higher rez, it is arguably worth it depending on the title and I say that as I find most games with my system are more CPU bound
than GPU bound.
System specs in sig. Running cpu at 4.6GHz overclock, stable there.

p.s. if not updated the driver set is actually Nvidia's latest beta not the 275.x

Never seen a reason to overclock, myself. I'd much rather have a stable system then 10+ FPS.
