Overhype and Overcriticism [Long Rant]

Post » Tue Dec 08, 2015 2:41 am

[BtwIknowitisntreallyalongrantimsorry]

People need to chill.

People have got very strong feelings over this game. Its either they overhype everything and insist it is 10/10, or they nitpick every little flaw and overexaggerate the flaws while comparing it to games with just as many flaws.

For whatever reason so many people cite games like witcher 3 and complain that the animation and graphics svck. Ive seen gameplay of witcher 3; it looks great but it doesnt look THAT great.

It doesnt help that a lot of these people are either trolls or are tryhard backseat gamers who form their entire opinion on a few minutes of gameplay on youtube. Then [censored] make a fool of themselves and argue, while people who don't know alot about the game see the amount of pessimism and assume the game is no good.

From what ive see the game has its flaws, and looks fun, but I cant form a good opinion until I actually play it.

But the point im getting at is that I have never seen a game have such over and under criticism for no good reason. Just play the game instead of argue about it.

Welcome to the Internets. This isn't new. It was exactly the same for BGS's 3 previous releases as well. Actually, it was way worse for FO3.

I'm giving it 30 out of 10. Because hyperbole is the business of life.

edit: I haven't even played it. But when I do, I'll give it 50 out of 10.

I suppose you are right, I just didn't focus on this sort of stuff as much in the previous years.

Meh.

Read a few reviews from opposing spectrum. What I'm getting is it's a good game, but not bar-setting (that was the Witcher 3 earlier this year). Best BGS story to date. Companions are well written, SPECIAL is awesome, factions are cool. BGS needs a new engine (which I agree with), with the opinion of settlement building being the most varying.

I can live with this. BGS has been using the Fallout IP to test the waters and then goes back to Tamriel to really push the envelope. If the writing for narrative and characters are the best it's ever been for Beth then that makes me excited for the next Elder Scrolls. Hopefully by then they have a new engine up an running.

There's no reason to concern yourself with how/why other people are experiencing the game.
Maybe watch a few reviews to get an idea on what the new features are like or any bugs you need to be careful of, and then just enjoy the game the way that you want.

Your complaints are basically the same complaints that you dislike. One more random voice on the internet. ;)

I know it's a BGS game. So I expect an 8/10 game.

An overall good game with some flaws, wich can be modded away later on.

And yes, I am a Fan of the series indeed. No hardcoe, but a fan.

Maybe that's why I don't understand the rants at NMA and such.

Or maybe I am just happy this series didn't died in someones desk as IP-documents, but is used instead.

Is it different? Yes, of course it is.

But difference doesn't tells us if it's better nor if it's worse. That's something someone needs to expierence on his/her own to make up their mind without prejustice.

That's why I do expect an overall good game. Bethesda has become better over the years.

I remember back in the days I thought TES would be hellish boring.

This was changed with TES 4 (I did own TES3 aswell, but couldn't get into it somehow).

The Fallout Franchise kicked in and I gave it a try.

The german version of Fallout 3: totally cut and horrible.

Got an uncut version later with dlcs and it was awesome. Playtime: over 200 hrs

New Vegas got released.

It's wasn't the Fallout I expected nor the one wich will keep me hooked. It has nice additions, but feels somewhat empty. Playtime: around 130 hrs.

Skyrim held me busy for quite some time aswell, but I simply can't stand all those medival stuff for years ;).

As you can see most of the stuff is just personal flavour, while a gamerating should be some sort of review aswell.

Are the graphics up to date?

Who the [censored] cares as long as it fits the game?

I read some reviews, and if a rating is decreased because a long existing "issue" is still in, than it's okay.

Also it's BGS. They actually don't need to put that much work into the game!

They have one of the biggest modding scenes out there. If BGS doesn't does it, certainly a modder will.

So I am not worried about what I read so far.

I just want to play the game. I spent several hours finalizing my build yesterday so I won't have to start over like I do with every Bethesda title.

Going bway back from when I saw one of the earliest trailers, I knew it would marginally different than FO3, and the settlement 'feature' was a mod that some of us have enjoyed for years. I'm not expecting a groundbreaking game, but I know I will enjoy it because it's been a long time since i've touched the Fallout games and the timing is just right. I read some of the lowest scored reviews and their main criticism is the fact that it's more of the same. Great news for me!

My opinion is no more important or correct than any one elses, but I do try to be as neutral as possible :)

where was Witcher 3 bar-setting?

it had a great story, but the open world aspect of it didn't even came close to the 5 year old F:NV

the amount of exploration and variety in Fallout's open worlds is just on a way higher level, than what we had in any other game...

and it looks like they made it this time as well

I think most people just like the 'fantasy, colourful' setting with their 'hero' Geralt more than the destroyed look of the Fallout worlds

Bar-setting in the sense that it had linear quality stories in an open world. Though I agree the open world in TW3 could have been better. In that regard BGS are the masters. I'm sure that any gamer worth their salt know this.

TW3 quests and side quests were awesome. Cutscenes and animations top notch. Definitely something other games can learn from. But whenever i hear people say their open world is epic or flawless, I smile, because only Bethesda open worlds make ME feel small. Playing as Geralt felt like I was a giant, because the trees, vegetation and buildings were fairly small in scale.

The way you post and the way you attack you seem to be on the first group of people, the "10/10" really devoted fan_BOY.

I saw the [Long Rant] in the title, and I was all ready to see a huge mass of text, in ALL CAPS, hell bent on punishing the very idea of punctuation and grammar. And what do I find? 10 sentences, written in a mostly level-headed tone, with only a few minor grammatical errors.

You sir (or madam, let's not make assumptions here), have seriously overhyped your rant. It's not even rant. You promised me a rant, and what do I find? Not a rant, that's what. I was expecting Rant of the Year material over here, instead I get something that's not even a 3/10 on the rant scale. Way to over-promise.

Biggest disappointment of the year. Or maybe just for the day. So far at least. Things might take a turn for the worst.

Not that I want to get into a debate over the graphical fidelity of TW3, but it's the best looking game on the market (at least on max settings for the PC). Star Wars Battlefront is close, but TW3 still has a more vibrant color palette. Of course, BGS hasn't been known for state of the art visuals since Oblivion, so I wasn't expecting them to make a game that was photo realistic. They aren't Crytek, DICE, CDPR, or other developers who build engines to try and get as close to photo realism as possible.

If the OP is considered a 'long rant', then we have certainly become a doomed soundbite culture unable to process anything longer than a tweet. ;)

And yeah, I sort of fall into the over-hyped camp, but being hyped is part of the fun.

There's an old saying: opinions are like buttholes and they all stink.

If you remember this while reading, then any opinion shouldn't be taken seriously, even if you agree with it.

I will admit: reading the hyper gamers (not sure why the other word was censored) rage against any "negative" review has made this hype a wonderful experience. Some of the things they say are funny, as if they can make a better game.

:D

I have told you a million times not to exaggerate!

I ignore hype and I ignore most reviews and stay away as best I can, to play the games I am interested in. Sometimes they meet my expectations, sometimes they way exceed them and I feel good about spending the money. And sometimes they fall below what I'd hoped and i am bummed I ponied up the cash. But frankly, that is true of almost any form of entertainment I choose to spend my limited "fun" money on. :)

Eh OP, no worries, this is standard fare for a Bethesda release.

I bet the developers have to just sit back sometimes and chuckle in the great confidence they uniquely possess. They make games like no other and are always financially rewarded for it. It really ticks some people off, because they haven't figured yet that graphics, UIs, and animations don't matter near as much as they think they it should.
