Paid $150 for a paper map.

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 4:24 am

I pre-ordered the CE two months before the release date. When it arrived, it had a paper map in the case.

I remember reading a twitter post from someone (Hines?) saying that ALL pre-orders, regardless of normal / CE version, would have a cloth map.

I know, boo hoo, it's not the end of the world... but it IS upsetting, as this is the most money I've ever spent on a video game (not counting a couple years of WoW fees, haha).

Amazon didn't actually advertise the cloth map on the CE page, but they DID advertise it on the page for the regular version. So I have no recourse there.

Am I totally out of luck? Buyer beware? Never trust Twitter again?

- OR - do I have the correct map, and this is as close to cloth as it gets? I mean, it's creased and folded just like a map... and I work at a printing company, so I know paper when I see it. :)

Anyone else run into the same problem?

Thanks for your time (especially when you could be playing Skyrim...) ;)

It's canvas paper. It's thick and textured, but it's not actually cloth.

technically speaking, mines cloth, vinyl. which is like paper but still cloth.

I'm thinking of taking this to my cities leather store and offering a good sum to transpose the map onto some rabbit skin.

I pre-orded from Gamestop just because I wanted the game, the map was a bonus. The map was supposed to be a different material from what I read, can't remember if it was cloth or just a thicker paper, which is what mine is.

When I picked the game up they said the map was inside the case and that everyone got one.

Are you not in the US because my pre-order was 59$ + the strategy guide. The 150$ should have been for the collectors edition which included much more to be interested in than just a map.

Wish the map were cloth to but meh is good enough for me.

I was NEVER told that CE would get a different map, or that the map (one usually comes with the games anyway) would be anything but a bit nicer than the ones from the other versions. I think the map they gave us was actually rather nice.

However, the CE was not sold on the basis that it comes with a map. It comes with a dragon statue, and I think it had another bonus. The guide book DOES come with a more detailed map, but the maps you get with the game are mostly just for show. They're supposed to be a decoration.

No, you paid $150 for a statue, the map came free with all preorders of skyrim.

Yes, I'm aware that the collector's edition has nothing to do with what kind of map you get. I ordered the CE for the other extras. (And the art book alone is worth the money. I am loving it so much!)

However, Bethesda confirmed that ALL PRE-ORDERS (regardless of whether CE or regular version) would get the "premium map."

I said all this in my original post. :)

To elucidate further:

They said it would be "like burlap."

The map I got is not like burlap, it is like slightly-textured paper, folded about 6 times and shoved in the cardboard wallet behind the manual.

So. Do I have the "premium" map or don't I? In the product photos on Amazon, the map shown is CLOTH. It has folds and wrinkles and so forth. It looks soft. That's all I'm saying.

Is there actually a cloth map for this game, or just two different paper maps?

Thanks again.

P.S. I'm totally happy with the game and all the other content I got with the CE, just sad about the map. My first CRPG was Ultima IV, and buddy, that had a cloth map... on cloth. :)

The CE came with a nice artbook and a making-of dvd, which in my opinion are enough to justify the extra money. The statue was just kind of a bonus. Pretty sure the official pre-order stated that the map was "cloth-like" and not actually cloth, it's more like thick paper pressed to feel like burlap.

I never like maps that come with games... because they have to get folded.

It's simply a production logistic. The first pressing of the game, all maps will be the "premium" quality version. In other words, if you do pre-order, you're guaranteed to get one of the first pressings. But for subsequent pressings of more copies of the game, they will print a cheaper quality map. So yeah, that's why if you buy the game without pre-ordering it shortly after release, there's still a good chance that you'll get the higher quality map.

You paid $150 and only got a paper map? You didn't get the game, art book, statue etc? Wow you got really ripped off.

Or you just like terribly misleading titles. One of the two.

I pre-ordered the regular edition for the "cloth" map as well. When I picked it up at Best Buy they said the map is inside the case. The case indicates that a premium map is included inside. I opened it up at the store and it was just the textured paper map. I was disappointed and asked if that was it. The employees there said that they thought that was the map. I would like to see what a normal map looks like to compare.

That is an awesome idea. Be sure to post some pics if you do it.

The first shipment has the map
The next shipments not
Also, the map is made of a canvas like material, not cloth

RULE 1: Never pre-order a game without reading reviews and player feddback first
RULE 2: Never order CE's they are a waste of money.
RULE 3: Upgrade your PC with the money you saved by not buying the CE
RULE 4: Dont complain about not being able to play on high or ultra graphics settings, if you cannot figure out what CPU and/or video card you have.
RULE 5: For that matter do not complain about anything if you cannot figure out what CPU or video card you have.
RULE 6: Never pair a powerful video card with a weak CPU or vice versa

Or you just can't read. I've answered this twice already - once in my first post, and once in a subsequent post. I'm not typing it all again, because you won't read it the third time if you didn't read it the first two. ;)

Oh, for crying out lou......

YES I GOT ALL THE CE SWAG. Lol.

I realize the topic title is a bit misleading. My POINT is that for as much money as I spent (two months before release date, I'll remind you) I really would feel ripped off if I didn't get something I was supposed to get. I'm a "premium customer," paying top dollar. That's all.

Apparently, from what everyone has said, I DID get the premium map.

However, the only thing that this map has in common with cloth is that both are made of molecules... and that's about it.

Caveat Emptor, as someone said.

I'm in the process of making a hi-res scan of the "claper" map so that I can print it out on a 44" plotter. If it's going to be paper, fine, but at least it will be big.

To answer the last couple posts:

VinUnleaded: Thanks for berating me for complaining about the game's performance, which I did not do. Runs on Ultra at 60 FPS, no problems there. And "never pre-order without reading player feddback first".... not even gonna touch that one. Pre-order. Player "feddback." Riiight.

mempol: This is nothing like canvas. It is textured paper. Oh, well.

I'm over it! Lol.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.
