Paladin build question

Post » Fri Jul 20, 2012 4:21 pm

Does a paladin need to use a shield? Trying to build one, already going for Destruction Alteration and Restoration and One-Handed. Also, does a paladin traditionally use conjuration? Cause im reallly sick of using conjuration all the time.....but the extra help in melees is tempting.

Personally I would build a paladin as follows

Heavy armor
2-h weapon
1-h weapon
Shield
Restoration
Speech (rp perspective, paladins can be persuasive or charismatic, and many "good" persuade options)

Gonna go with a full edit here:

Restoration is really a staple of the class. You'll find very few if any at all who will argue against that.
Heavy or Light, your choice
Same with weapons, 1/2 handed. Do note that Dawnbreaker is 1 handed, and is freakin awesome
I've played paladins without a shield, its doable. But Shields are more fun imo
Alteration gives you Detect Life/Dead, which is very fitting of the class too. Telekinesis is great as well

Ranged? You have a few options:

Destruction - I tend to stick with Lightning. Disintegrate helps to prevent necromancy
Archery - I don't want to reveal too much, but Dawnguard holds surprises for the budding Archer.
Alteration - You can get Paralysis, but only at expert level.

As for Conjuration, MOST paladins won't use it. Why? Because you either summon daedra or reanimate the dead, which most paladins are opposed to. Expel/Banish Daedra is likely the only spell you will use

You can always keep a bow on you. Paladins are usually portrayed as martial holy warriors. So I'd have a bow, but still wouldn't put points in archery. Just put out enough damage till I get in close.

So does this sound about right for a Paladin?

Main Skills : Restoration, One-Handed, Block, Alteration
Minor Skills : Smithing, Enchanting, Archery, Speech

Any suggestions on how to roleplay a paladin in Skyrim?

Well, what religion does your Paladin follow?

Look up the Nine Divines and decide if you want to follow one, two, or all of them.

Or perhaps you serve a Daedric Lord, but the only ones I would recommend are Azura and Meridia. The others don't seem fitting.

Don't be an [censored], and you will most likely not want to join either the DB or the TG...

This is a magic user not a paladin.

I would say either Talos, Stendarr or Zenithar....mercy doesnt seem to fit a paladin, but Talos or Zenithar (because of smithing) really seem to fit

Stendarr is more than just Mercy. He is also the God of Justice!

So we've already established that you are a disciple of Talos and Zenithar. That means:

- For Talos, kill the Thalmor. What I do is then take their weapons and leave them at shrines to Talos.
- For Zenithar, kill bandits. Zenithar represents honest work, and bandits are pretty much the opposite of that.

Want a rundown of the other gods?

Arkay - God of Life and Death and the seasons. Adherents of Arkay hunt the undead.
Kynareth - Goddess of Nature. This is my personal view, but I believe that Kynareth finds werewolves/hagravens to be abominations.
Akatosh - Dragon God of Time. The main quest is pretty much a huge quest for him, and slaying wayward dragons helps I imagine.
Mara - Goddess of Love. Well, there's at least one quest you can do for her.
Dibella - Goddess of Beauty. Again, one quest, but hard to worship. In the game that is.
Julianos - God of Wisdom. As long as you are casting spells, I imagine Julianos is happy!

So i guess going with Stendarr, Talos, and Arkay would be the logical choices. Justice, war and killing undead seems to be what a paladin is made for. Thanks for the help sounds like a somewhat challenging character for me without destruction or conjuration for the extra help.

Destruction can fit a Paladin! Fire and Lightning work really well against the undead for varying reasons. Fire does massive damage against vampires, and Lightning (combined with Disintegration) prevents reanimation.

Of course, if you are willing to wait, there are some new Restoration spells in Dawnguard that you might be interested in. I know I will be!

You could also go with Meridia...she's a Daedric Lord who hates the undead. Would also be interesting to rp a daedra worshiping paladin.

"She almost always comes in the form of a beautiful woman. Like a siren, calling mortals in to do her bidding, Meridia has always had a passionate hatred for all things http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Undead. She takes great joy in rewarding mortals who purge the realms of the wretched walking-corpses, along with any http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Necromancers who have tampered with Meridia's life-giving energies. It is stated that Meridia is one of the few Daedric Princes to be benevolent and not wholly evil, if at all."

Yep! Meridia would also be a good deity to worship, albeit a bit single minded imo. With the Nine Divines, you have a wide array of deities to choose from!

Interesting. I'm playing as one right now. One handed, block, heavy armor, enchanting, restoration, destruction, and speech. I might get into archery later on, but probably until Dawnguard come out. And no a Paladin does not need conjuration. He need only rely on his might and wisdom.

I feel like adding in destruction would spread my perks a little thin....but initially i did want to have destruction be one of my main skills. Should a paladin use destruction? I was down to go without for the challenge but if a paladin is supposed to use it i would like to incorporate it somehow....yea cant wait to try dawnguard spells yet havent had a mage in dawnguard yet.

I still find it not right for any Paladin to be doing Meridia's bidding, she might not be horrible compared to all the other Daedric princes, but she's still evil.
she was well aligned with the Aurorans (the enemy of the Knights of the Nine)
If your a follower of the Eight and One, it's best to stay away from doing what the daedra ask of you :|
