Paranormal Reality TV Shows

Post » Sun Jun 30, 2013 1:39 am

I caught a few episodes of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Hunters, while there are some interesting moments, it is undeniably boring and unprofessional. My question is this: Are there any good reality TV shows out there that investigate paranormal, ghost, UFO, alien, monster, whatever?

This thread is not for the purpose of discussing whether [ ] are real or not.

If it's on the SyFy channel, I don't like the odds of it being a good show.

I am a fan of http://www.travelchannel.com/tv-shows/ghost-adventures on the Travel Channel.

Some really good episodes, a few boring and dull ones but IMHO they are really good at trying to debunk something first before jumping the gun.

I don't know if there are any shows like this, but if they actually did a serious investigation and concluded that the situation was fake, that they wouldn't hesitate to say so, or if they couldn't explain it, the would say exactly that, that it couldn't be explained, I might find that show interesting. Unfortunately, most of these shows (with a couple of exceptions) I've seen jump to the conclusion that if it can't be explained then it must be a genuine supernatural occurrence. "Fact or Faked" is decent, the crew actually do experiments to see if the can reproduce certain phenomena to a satisfactory level, if they can, they are not afraid to say that it is either faked for sure, or at the very least fake-able. If they can't, then all they say is they can't explain it, period. They haven't caufght any fakers, but they have shown ho a good lot of paranormal events can be faked, or at the very best misinterpreted.

It depends on how you classify "reality show," I guess. If we're only talking about "record a year of footage of some people there's no real reason to care about and edit it down to 30-minute chunks of train wreck until you have a season" then I agree...there's nothing good there. Some of them amount to putting morons in a cage together and giving them liquor...that should be illegal...like dog fighting.

I used to know a guy that was into the paranormal investigation shows and I watched a bunch with him. To be honest, I never saw anything that lead me to believe they amount to anything but running around with low-light cameras and some staged equipment malfunctions here and there to add drama. The only indication of anything paranormal is usually just coming from what the people are saying into their microphones and the occasional fuzzy anomaly in video and instrument readings...neither of which I find particularly compelling. "Oooh, it just got colder in here. The hair on my arms is standing up! Did you hear that? Look at the needle jump around on this doohickey!"

Unsolved Mysteries... the one that started it all, back in 1987

It may not be a great TV show, but at least it's presented in a manner that feels like an investigation, not a condescending "trick" on the audience like modern reality TV.
And all stories are supposedly true. ;)

Disclaimer: I haven't watched it since I was a kid, but I do remember it being creepy and fun to watch.

Are there any good ones? No. They are all pretty much consumed by obvious pseudoscience and other bullcrap.

I am not saying these paranormal things are fake or real, but the shows are full of it.

I also kind of hate how they state conjecture and speculation like it is fact. Kind of pisses me off tbh. Unreasonably so.

Probably because I like girls and the ones I tend to meet think these shows are "soooo real and interesting." Then want to watch them...with me. Ever been with a girl, soft and warm bodies pressed together, with an eye that won't stop twitching as you feel like your brain wants to commit suicide? It is maddening...

Bringing up Ancient Aliens reminds me of a Nova special where they basically trashed Von Daniken's "Ancient Astronauts" (the book which started the whole ancient aliens fad). One especially amusing thing they brought up was Daniken's close-up picture of a circular construct in the famous lines on the plains of Nazca (Peru?), that he speculated looked like the markings of a landing pad, According to the Nova special, what Von Daniken neglected to mention that the circle he showed measuered approximately 3 feet across, which would mean the aliens were exceedingly tiny. Apparently his entire book was rife with these misleading and (seemingly deliberate) misinterpreted details.

You don't like Mythbusters?

Most Haunted was entertaining. In the "unintentional comedy" way :lmao:

No there are not.

There is a very simple reason for this.

The past 200-250 years the paranormal has been investigated via the scientific method. Guess what the results are.

There are zero recorded reliable instances of anything paranormal, including ghosts, apparitions, ESP, out-of-body experiences and so forth. Zero.

We do however have myriad examples of scams, gullible people and dim people who don't understand how their own senses work.

After 250 years we can therefore safely say that ghosts do not exist.

However a tv show is there to make money, to get viewers.

A real paranormal tv show would be very boring as each case would end the same, no reliable results indicating anything paranormal.

So they stretch the truth and often also simply make stuff up.

Out of curiosity I watched one of these shows lately. It consisted of a family of liars who told a very Hollywood story about 'ghosts' and 'demons.'

No proof, just a story that was incredibly suspicious to me simply because there was too much of a narrative and too much of what Hollywood showed the past ten years.

I would not expect any real life story to follow a narrative like a written book, it just does not happen, people don't work that way. So that immediately got my bells ringing but it was 'documented' without any question into validity by this tv show.

Utter baloney, an insult to my intelligence and what do they think I am, three?

No, I'm rather allergic to quacks, liars and insanity like that.
