Pay to Play vs. Free to Play

Post » Tue Jul 02, 2013 8:51 am

Sorry this is my first post. I do have experience with other forums though. But what do you think is the better model for ESO to take. PTP (pay-to-play) or FTP (free-to-play). Personally I think ESO should go the Guild Wars 2 route of PTP but you only purchase the game once and you own it forever. I don't like monthly fees, and I also don't like the thought of the FTP because I hate micro transactions unless they're optional and not Pay-to-win. Overall I'm picky about game models and I hope Zenimax and Bethesda do it right. But I want to know what your thoughts are. Tell which type of game model should ESO have, plus advantages and disadvantages of each. Or just speak your mind...

Oh, it really is his first post. Ok well, this topic is one of the hottest arguments floating around here, and its in damn near every thread. Just stick around and you'll see plenty of discussion on it.

The polls here always are in favor of P2P, but there's plenty of B2P and F2P advocates around here vocalizing their opinions and desires.

I'm P2P all the way. Subscriptions bring the highest quality content and the best maintained game status of all the models, and supports longterm dedicated and loyal customers rather than "tourist" players that float from game to game, which in my opinion a F2P and B2P model promotes by their very nature of being, well, free.

I also absolutely despise cash shops that have more than small pets and mounts in them. Not even really a fan of those but they won't keep me from playing a game like all out freemium and microtrans shops will. They pollute the game with lazy play (buy it instead of earn it) and give incentive to the developers to create more [censored] to sell rather than [censored] to do, and that's not how a game should be. But they have to basically churn this type of content out because its simply not possible to maintain the other type of content to a large scale degree on the funds you make from box price and nickel and diming the playerbase as you can with a solid, guaranteed payment per month.

tl;dr I like subscriptions because microtrans is a nickel and dime con game that developers use to exploit the lazy or unskilled players, and it makes an overall bad game.

edit: Before anyone tries to say "but so many P2P games went F2P because they do better!" all I'll say is those games went F2P because they svcked too much to make people want to pay for them. By that logic you are basically admitting that F2P is a silver medal that the company had to settle for because they couldn't snag the gold.

And certain MMOs that went F2P recently you can't say that they failed. Rift going from P2P to F2P didn't happen because the game failed, to many it was THE best alternative to WoW out there. It was the only WoW clone that actually survived for a very very long time as a P2P model and it did a good job. I play the reason for it going F2P is the [censored] game known as Defiance that Trions made.

Highfive to stay alive my brother. Defiance sunk Rift as far as I'm concerned, it might have had a small population before F2P launched but it was still doing good, and was still fun. It'll remain as the best F2P out there for quite awhile, and go figure it was P2P for years. That's not a coincidence.

First post, but says he has experience elsewhere, yet doesn't do a even the slightest search. I call trolling and you guys bit. Sad, as it wasn't even a well designed troll post.

Trivia: Troll didn't originally refer to the under the bridge dwellers, it's a fishing term. IE you toss the bait line over board and pull it along hoping something will bite.

I like the bait though. I can't miss an opportunity to talk about how much I love P2P.
