PCs lagging behind next gen consols?

Post » Thu Dec 05, 2013 1:41 pm

Let's be honest not everyone has a phenomenal gaming rig with 4 way SLI Geforce GTX Titans (I certainly do not haave this) and for the price of $400 + subscriptions fees and taxes you can get one of these next gen consols that will honestly give you a very high quality gaming experience.

So . . . where is the incentive to make a graphically more demanding ESO for PC/Mac users who want the very best? In terms of quality vs. quantity I'm not exactly sure, which way ESO is headed. I think the fact that they opened the game up to consols was a no-brainer financial decision and a way of hedging bets.

I want to implore ESO devs to remember to update the graphical quality of the game for PC enthusiasts who have gone out of the way to make killer gaming rigs and would enjoy enhanced textures. Okay that's it.

**I am solidly in the PC camp on this one.

PS quality wise PCs are the way to go, but there may be more numbers for this game on the consol networks.

With PC's it all comes down to how much you want to spend. A top of the line build could run anywhere from $600-anything. A decent mid-grade build could be done for about $500, that will get you pretty good graphics and good performance. The problem with consoles is they are not upgradable. So, yes, they may perform better than your mid-grade build now, but 2, 3, 4 + years down the line you can add in pieces to your build for $50-$200 at a time to keep it current and looking great. Another thing is if your console breaks down, you're pretty much SOL figuring out whether to return it or send it into the shop, either way that's less time for gameplay. A PC you can troubleshoot the problem and get it taken care of within a day. I am def a little biased with PC's though :-)

@messy, I walked away during typing my answer and didn't see yours until too late. Yes, I agree. If PC users are going to spend hundreds of dollars on a video card then it's only fair that the game deliver top-of-the-line graphics. Make the graphics stable for console users and customizable for PC users.

Let me know when the next gen consoles can run games at 60 or more frames per second, because my 7 year old gaming PC can. Yes, even newer games.

I play on PC.

Game will look more or less the same on every platform since high-res textures cost money and they won't waste money.
Fram rate will be best on High-End-PCs.

PC is the most cost effectiv platform since ( 1 ) you are not forced to pay the extra 10 bugs per game as a PC-gamer (@ 1 game every 2 months over 7 years you pay over 1000€ for your PS4 and you can get a far better PC with that money or spent it on subsciption fees...)
and ( 2 ) you can use your PC for almost everything without any restrictions, for example you could wait 2 years from now and get a PS4-emulator to play PS4 only games on your PC...

The answer to all your question is PC.

Right know the consolepower is on midrange PC lvl, that is ok and im sure the will run Eso just fine, if you want the best graphic that is possible you will need a pc.

PC is much more powerful than these next gen consoles, I have an xbox one, and I have to say PC still tops gaming.

PC - can always upgrade PC - my 3 gig Radeon card isn't that already better than what the next gen consoles will give?

Games on Steam and even Origin cheaper for PC.

Plus - mods for solo games. After NWN and Bethesda games I always now seek out mods for solo games.I like waiting a year or two after out to see what has been done.

Even MMO games have more sensible controls with a keyboard.

PC all the way.

400$ is easily enough money to upgrade a PC to run better than PS4 or XBOX One.

PC for me, consoles still don't have the firepower my pc has, and I don't see me even intrested in a console until maybe ps6. But over all they have come along way and are good for some people, they are just not good for me..:)

The console market is huge, and I can see the draw for some people.

Console is not bad, but for people who have really nothing more common with Internet and anything else then just gaming. Whatever PC you need for any other reason to use can be easily used for gaming also and with much more options then console.

Example when console is best choice: 10 yers old boy asks parent for some device to play games. Parents do not want to expose son to internet, so better option is console.

Not right now of course, but certainly in a couple of years from some russian developers.

@jpp
bad example, you can run a PC without internet, too.

The problem that the PC guys have that have spent gazillions on their 'killer rigs' is that the % is so small in relation to the total consumer base that developers can't justify spending so much attention to features that will push their machines to the limit. I'm sorry for the self proclaimed 'pc master race' but that's the advantage that consoles will always have, every single owner of a console has identical specs, the developers know precisely how far they can push the boundaries and squeeze out every last bit of performance from them which leads to some phenomenal games. Take a look at The Last of Us, GTA V, Bioshock Inifinite, AC IV even Skyrim to see how far they've come working on 8 years old consoles such as the PS3 and xbox360. Having said that there are 'some' developers that will just go all out and push those killer rigs to the limit regardless, Star Citizen would be one that comes to mind. That thing is looking incredible on cutting edge PCs. Still, its definitely a minority.

Since the new consoles are basically like computer packaged in fancy boxes, I don't see any reason to get one. Except maybe for the exclusives.

Yeah that is right, but have you seen a skyrim with graphic mods on the pc, no console, not even the knew one, could run that, even my PC has sometimes problem with that. And lets say Eso will get really old like WoW is now, there will maybe be a graghic update than (like WoW now) PC Gamers say yeah give we can run it, console players are crying, because there consoles cant handel it.

PCs on every question. The only one that's close is cost. The initial box price of a console is slightly better (about $400) than the equivalent PC (about $500). But PCs are still more cost effective in the long run because you can get games for cheaper through steam and because the cost of upgrading a PC is much lower than buying a new console.

By the way, this whole thing about "too few PC gamers have good enough rigs" is just misguided.

Top of the line rigs are going to eat ESO alive. It won't come close to utilizing their potential, but that's fine. The game is built to run on any mid-range gaming rig from the last 5 years.

The consoles will probably play this game at near max, but not quite Ultimate, settings. Any mid range PC should be able to do the same.

Also, I think the PC market is actually bigger overall for this game since its an MMO. Certainly that's what all the polls show (but all the people answering those polls are on PCs so...) I am hopeful that ESO can bring new players into the genre though.

And I really want cross-platform play. :(

Tell me about it. Been on that bandwagon since it was announced. Faction I can change, servers I can switch, but different platform? Tough luck.

This is why most PC games have graphics settings. Those with killer rigs can set them at ultra, while those with less powerful systems can set them at minimum or anything in between.

Plus, I think some people are wildly overestimating the market share consoles will have in ESO. It's true that consoles typically sell more than PC, but this is an MMO.

To fail to build ESO for high end PCs would be a mistake that would put ZOS behind its competitors in the MMO market.

Yup.

That decision is so anathema to their stated goal of "everyone can play with their friends."

Consoles have brought at least one nice thing to gaming;

All games are a lot better optimized these days.

Console generation lasts quite long (in gaming standards). And every year games keep pushing out and they all "need" to look better and better.

Since consoles can't be upgraded, the better looking games need to be optimized better to run on that same old console.

One could speculate that now that a new generation of consoles are out, games might take a significant leap in graphics and stuff 'cause the hardware can handle a lot more.

Only time will tell.

Could be.

But for the launch titles at least there seems to be a much smaller jump up in graphics for this generation compared to the last.

2012 360 games looked a lot better than 2005 360 games. But 2005 360 games were better than 2013 XboxOne games, compared to the prior generation.

I am not sure if I will play ESO at all but if I do it will be on the Xbox, I have never liked PC gaming and am always rather annoyed with how the few times I have tried the majority of those I dealt with had this immature elitist attitude which is just pointless. My computer is mainly for two things, working on reports and pointless time killing. I like having a console because it is devoted to exactly what I want when I am using it, gaming or media of some sorts. I know there are fancy high tech gaming computers out there but I just dont see them being more impressive than a console, especially since I am not obsessed with graphics. And while mods look entertaining I couldnt really care less about them and console commands are cheating so again I dont want that either. All in all I will stick to the xbox console for it.
