Perfect Mage Build

Post » Tue Nov 13, 2012 8:35 pm

Ok so I am a High Elf mage. Pretty much want to rely on magic for this run on Skyrim then become a evil vampire.

Just looking for a bit of mage advice as I have not gone the whole magic route yet. Basically I plan to max out on all magic perks apart from Enchanting. Is this pretty much the way to go for mages or am I missing out on other perks I may need. I am a high elf if that makes any difference.

you're gonna be weak without enchanting
you WILL run out of magicka fast or if you use robes you WILL be killed in 2 hits

Going all mage is brilliant if you know how to use it well and mix it up to your play style, pick the right perks and of course enchant your apparel.
Illusion crowd controls, but throw in an atronach or two buffed by some of that rally, paralyze and a well placed rune spell and you will dominate the fight.

Just don't forget mage armor if you are going with robes. And I would go enchanting route, it really helps with magicka pool and reducing costs of spells. Plus with soultrap spell it is easy to collect those souls.

I really like the pure mage, its really fun. I try to max out all magic schools (including enchating). This makes gameplay really diverse as you can deal with each situation differently if you choose.

Illusion's frenzy spells, combined with Destruction's Fireball/Ice Storm and particularly Chain Lightning can let you wipe out entire groups of enemies with minimal threat to yourself.

Paralyze is your friend at higher level.

Mage Armor Perk is almost a must if you don't want to use any Armor. Otherwise, Smithing needs to employed.

Destruction casting reductions should be utilized en-masse. It's even possible to drop your casting cost to 0. Since Destruction spells are weak endgame, you'll need to cast a ton to take out high-level enemies.

Companions + Heal Other Spells can be used to great effect.

Alchemy and a dagger or bow is the only way to give your destruction spells a massive damage boost. With a custom Fortify Destruction spell, and a high-potency Magic Weakness poison, you can deal over triple damage with your destruction.

You won't get all the perks, so you need to decide which fields within the skills you specialise in. Atromancy or necromancy, frost, fire or shock for examples.

Take the cost reduction perks, don't get zero cost gear - it's a much more fun and progressive way to play. If you have up to the apprentice perk, don't use spells above that level because it will blow all your magicka.

When I have finished this playthru I am going to replay my Altmer mage from the beginning and have a go at making some tutorial videos. For now I'm playing a vampire/mage who is also an assasin. He spcialises in Necromancy and Alteration and has earned some assassin perks, so he's a little differen from how my pure mage will be. Here is a little video showing his skills and perks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5oy7V-pef4 and here is a video of him in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfEGZMU_YEk

You won't get all the perks, but you'll only be six short.
