Performance tweaks for multi-core CPUs

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:54 am

http://itcprosolutions.com/skyrimguides/tweak_guide.htm has a whole multi-core performance tweak section, pasted below. Can anybody confirm whether these tweaks work or if they'll cause stability issues? I have an Intel Core I7 3770K 3.5G. Thanks.

In Skyrim.ini Add/Edit:
[BackgroundLoad]
bBackgroundLoadLipFiles=1
bLoadBackgroundFaceGen=1
bUseMultiThreadedFaceGen=1
bBackgroundCellLoads=1
bLoadHelmetsInBackground=1
bUseMultiThreadedTrees=1
bUseBackgroundFileLoader=1
[Animation]
bMultiThreadBoneUpdate=1
[HAVOK]
iNumThreads=**
[General]
bUseThreadedTempEffects=1
bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1
In SkyrimPrefs.ini Add/Edit:
[Navmesh]
bUseThreadedMeshes=1
[Trees]
bUseMultiThreadedTrees=1
bShadowMaskZPrePass=1
[BackgroundLoad]
bBackgroundLoadLipFiles=1
bLoadBackgroundFaceGen=1
bUseMultiThreadedFaceGen=1
bBackgroundCellLoads=1
bLoadHelmetsInBackground=1
bUseMultiThreadedTrees=1
[General]
bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1
bUseThreadedBlood=1
bUseThreadedMorpher=1
bUseThreadedTempEffects=1
bUseThreadedTextures=1
bUseThreadedMeshes=1
bUseThreadedLOD=1
bUseThreadedAI=1

**For "iNumThreads" set this to the number of CPU cores your PC has. If you have 4 or more leave this as 5 (maximum).

I don't think these settings have been really tested with Skyrim extensively (Yet). Couldn't hurt to try then out, but I would test the settings 1 at a time and see if it affects stability.

I don't use any of those, and my game has only ever crashed a couple of times (due to mods), and performance is smashingly superb.

To be honest, I have an issue with tweak guides, that present loads of ini settings without extensive explanations.

All the settings could of course be absolutely fine and useful, but how have they been verified?

Take all those multithreading parameters for instance. Skyrim has been developed for a six-core XBOX, and official requirements for PC state a minimum of two cores. Tom's Hardware one tested Skyrim and came to the conclusion that it effectively utilizes roughly three cores on a PC on average. So, now somebody comes and tells us to set a bunch of multithreading toggle parameters from 0 to 1. But who can say that they are not internally at 1 by default? Before adjusting a setting, I would very much like to know at least what it's actual and true default value is.

I am not saying, that those settings should not be used, and they may well improve performance for all I know, but I just feel uncomfortable about such lists without knowing how they have been generated and verified. I may be too cynical here, but I suspect that many people just like to see long lists of parameters on tweak lists. If I allow myself to be absolutely cynical(*), I could ask what prevents anybody from cutting and pasting together tweak lists from half a dozen previous games without verifying them with Skyrim. I am not at all saying that anything like that would happen, but it would be nice and confidence building to see some anolysis together with the list of settings, that would exclude the possibility.

(*) That is what having worked in business can do to you :smile:.

P.S. Although I am critical, I do not dismiss things loosely either, and I did bookmark that page in case it might eventually prove useful. So thanks for the link.

Been using almost all of those for awhile now, havnt noticed any decrease in performance or an increase, but i have noticed that my I5-2500k is running acroos all 4 cores better then before. Was using 2 cores at about 60% and the other 2 at about 30-40%, with the tweaks i get around 40-50% on all 4 cores.

I tried the Skyrim Configurator utility* some time ago and I also noticed the "threaded" settings. Tbh I did not notice a significant difference on my i7 930. Interested in in-depth information nonetheless :smile:
