Photographs that stood out to you

Post » Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:47 pm

Today, I stumbled upon these http://sports.yahoo.com/photos/olympics-full-moon-makes-sixth-olympic-ring-slideshow/the-full-moon-rises-through-the-olympic-rings-hanging-beneath-tower-bridge-during-the-london-2012-photo-1344093558.html, perfectly angled to make a "sixth olympic ring" over the Tower Bridge in London.

I have seen others that made me go http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/13/Lunch-atop-a-skyscraqer-c1932.jpg and others that made me just http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/54/Lange-MigrantMother02.jpg/260px-Lange-MigrantMother02.jpg

If you don't have any that stood out, you could Google "Pulitzer prize images" or just something general like "nature pictures", etc.

Please keep it clean and forum appropriate! :D

There's an old photo of a young boy rushing up to his father as he leaves for war. I will never forget that photo til the day I die.

There was a great exhibition in the Amsterdam Photography Museum that featured the best of New York Times that I went to a few months ago. I can't even begin to describe the pictures but they were absolutely amazing. What struck me most about the pictures is that most settings looked really staged and surreal while they were actually all news pictures of real situations that actually happened. I think the ones of the oil fields were the most amazing pictures of the exhibition.

Here's some pictures that I could find if the links are working;

My old apartment in Amsterdam used to have a huge blown up/ a0 copy of that MIA picture on the wall. I was really surprized to see it in the exhibition because I didn't knew it came from the NYtimes.

We have it so easy these days, in spite of the current economic climate. Talking with older relatives about how it was back then is pretty sobering.

indeed it is,

my grandmother told me stories of how she grew up in the 1930s. She had 10 siblings, her family were Czech immigrants who worked in a Pennsylvania coal mine.
she didn't get a pair of shoes until she was six years old and every winter the only thing they could eat cabbage and sourkrout.

then there were stories of her teenage years when WWII was going on. She worked for GE when they were producing war-supplies. There was a shortage of workers so even teenage girls (like herself) were accepted to work in the factories.
she said it was hot as hell and hectic since they were always on a deadline to get things done.

Wow, some of those made me tear up :touched:
Now I can't think of photos that stood out to me, though there have been many.

But on the emotional side, photojournalism, I see many on the BBC website, yesterday this one jumped out to me, from the Syria troubles:

Photos can be very powerful. Photos that strike you emotionally, reaches out to you, or captures a moment/setting nicely is what makes a photo great. at least in my opinion. Some photos that really stand out to me are:

Stricken child crawling towards a food camp. (Left it out because it's so sad and horrible)
The Falling Man

There are TONS of other pictures I'd love to post, but I can't remember all of them, and some may be too innapropriate (some of the one I listed may even be questionable).
