[REQ] Pick up books

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 1:10 am

Pretty simple, pick up books. Not read them, then pick them up. Just pick them up. Hella annoying when you wanna just go around and pick loads of books just for collective purposes.

Would this be easy to do?

Do you mean being able to avoid the 'page opening animation' before pressing E to store it in your inventory?

Or do you mean to avoid reading skill books until a later time?

Or both?

I meant skipping the animation, so you can just pick up the book like you would a coin purse or sword. All I really want is to collect all my books and read later on.

But your other option sounds like a plan too.

Aye, the current system is a bit meh. This will get modded in no time I'm sure. Might even attempt it myself if it isn't too time consuming. I've played since Daggerfall but never attempted to mod. First time for everything though!

Definitely agree - if you're picking up a ton of books, the opening animation is absolutely tedious. When you don't want to read them, just pick them up, it takes way too long.

probably have activating a book store its original state and add a weapon clone to the active hand (probably store the active handheld state too) then firing the weapon would read it and sheathing the weapon could put it in inventory. My bad, And change the "Take Book" while reading it to "Put Book back" or maybe just Close Book and have the Block/OffHand action put it back.

All you'd need to do is replace books with activators. When you click on it, the script disables the activator (the book it disappears from the world) and adds the appropriate book to your inventory.

This would solve another issue/request I saw on the boards, which is to delay skill gains from books until you have a chance to read the book at a later time. Currently, you gain the skill the moment you open the book, and you *have* to open the book to pick it up. Most people don't want to feel obliged to read every book the find while looting dungeons or other places. It doesn't really make a lot of sense that way, that's for sure.

Little Johnny was robbing the McDougal's homestead, but he was busted when they came home and found him reading their books.

I actually had a different complaint. You cannot 'read' a book when its in a chest, you can only take it. Then I have to try and remember all the books from the chest/NPC, go into my inventory, and find it.

Have you looked at the Equip buttons while the book is highlighted? (I know with the gamepad you can read them in containers with that RT/LT)

@WillieSea:
I've noticed that you gain the option to read a book (or directly equip an item) if you hold the run key while viewing it in an inventory. Undocumented behaviour as far as I know, but it's there.
