Played for two hours on the PC version

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 11:23 pm

After hearing all the stories about this was wrong and that was wrong with the game, I finally got to play the game.

My system is almost 4 years old (highish spec at the time) so was not expecting too much.

I was pleasantly surprised, after it checked my system it set it to medium, which I change to high.

Had no crashes, no texture problems so it would seem a lot of the problems people are experiencing could be problems with their own systems. PCs always were bad for that, maybe why manufacturers seem to favour consoles more these days.

So the game is working fine although there are a couple of small things that I find a little awkward, the mouse works fine except when turning the characters view it moves a little slow, although the mouse wheel works through the chat and inventory menus. I also find the inventory style will take a little getting used to although I'm starting to get used to it already, the fact you can't see all the inventory at once. The character creator is also a bit clumsy compared to some modern ones, but it's ok.

Would advise playing it in 3rd person view to start with or at least change between 1st and 3rd person especially when using the inventory to put armor on so you can actually see that you've put it on. Although like the previous games it's easier to locate things to pick up in 1st person view.

I was surprised how fluent the graphics seem, have not experience any choppy frames at all yet.

Early days yet though and I'm never easily swayed, if it plays as well as it has been doing, I'll be well pleased. Although that mouse character turning speed could do with a boost.

Edit: One other thing can be a bit confusing, some of the buttons are marked as M1 and M2 which I guess is for a hand controller rather than a mouse, but once you know what activate what it does not matter too much.

Don't want to spam up the place with a new thread, but I'll ask you this since you've played it.

How do you get out of the chest menus? Esc just brings up the menu. I just got in to the keep where you first open the chests to get gear and can't back out of the menus.

Enjoying the game, just wondering, how do you manipulate objects (lifting up items, dragging bodies etc?). Really want to know so I'd appreciate any help :)

Yeah, tab

You might find when looting some things it's easier to actually click on the lootable items rather than hit the loot all button, sometimes found loot all did not actually loot all. But unless you have a lot of bag space loot all is not something I would do too often.

Thanks for the review. I've been wondering how the PC version would run. Sounds great.

Hmmm, I tried tab, but it does nothing. I found out that I can just click the far left edge of the screen and it backs out.

Thanks all.

Yep when I got to the first town I got a lot of comments from NPCs about my standard of dress - switched to 3rd person and realised I must have dropped or sold stuff that I had been wearing and was down to my undies. :o I prefer to play in 1st person, but quickly learned to switch to 3rd person to make sure that I was appropriately dressed before going out in public :o

I have been extremely content with the performance on my rig as well! Running better than Oblivion actually on High settings.

Specs:

cpu: E8500 C2D @ 3.9GHz
ram: 4GB DDR2-800
gpu: 512mb HD 4870

For the folks getting sub-par performance on higher-end rigs, I would think that overclocks are the culprit. Try rolling back to stock and go from there :/

There's full water reflections set at ultra, on high you don't get the sky reflected, but there are check boxes so you could customise it. Not been near any still water to check reflections out properly as yet though.

One of the things that I had issues with, is that after only about 60 minutes of playing, I opened up one menu or another and the mouse was extremely laggy. It was like trying to move the mouse through a bowl of honey. The fps however was doing fine in the game as reported by fraps to be somewhere between 48 and 60 so not sure what would make the mouse all laggy like that, but it's only happened once so far at about the 60 minute mark, but I'm only into the game for 85 minutes thus far.

I'm hoping it doesn't come back, while the game is still playable when the mouse goes all laggy like, it's just plain not fun when it does happen.

Mouse one has always referred to the left click.
Mouse two has always referred to the right click.

I've misunderstood the comment, haven't I?
