Played once, now won't load! AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:40 pm

Hi y'all.
I installed FONV yesterday for the first time, set the graphics up and loaded and played it for an hour before I had to switch it off due to family commitments.
I settled down last night ready for a couple of hours of quality game playing but now, whenever I try to load the game, I get a blank, black window in the top left hand corner that does nothing. I then have to go to the Task Manager to exit an unresponsive FONV. I have tried altering the graphic settings to low and it still does the same. I have even un-installed the game and installed a fresh version downloaded from Steam, but the same thing still happens. I have applied all updates that have been flagged to me by the software.

I can't seem to find anyone else with this issue so does anyone have any ideas to get me up and running again? Any help would be much appreciated as the Steam support is next to useless!!

Thanks in advance.....

Might be a silly question but have you tried rebooting the computer?

LOL! Yes, I have. I tried playing last night and just now, at 2 in the afternoon so the PC has been on and off a couple of times. It is a dedicated games machine, so it isn't bogged down with any useless apps or such like and this is the first game I have had trouble with so I'm a little dis-heartened at the moment :(.

Try moving out the ini's related to the game in users\my documents\mygames\falloutnv so the game recreates them when you run it. Also try setting steam and the game exe's to run with administrator privileges. And verify integrity of game cache in steam under local files options.

If that fails try uninstalling any codec packs.

Strange that it worked at first but then not when you tried to run it again, I can't imagine there being any changes inbetween.

It is because you are playing on an AMD....

Just kidding, just kidding.

I have seen this before where the save file is corrupted. The reason this causes an issue is the game wants to load the screen shot from the save. Try moving the most recent save file out of My Documents/My Games/Fallout New Vegas/Saves folder and see if the game will load. If it does, that save is corrupted and you might as well toss it.

And, although you say this is a gaming machine, have you done a specific clean boot to see if anything has snuck on to your system since you last played?

Strange that so many people are getting corrupt saves, I've played for many hours and haven't run into this issue (yet). I noticed however that quicksaving or saving when npc's are doing something scripted relating to a quest, tends to break the quest. So if you quicksave just before speaking to them incase theres a skill check while they are still walking some place, when you reload the save, instead of opening a dialog when you press E to continue with the quest, they just simply stand there and say their standard npc talk or just won't react to you at all when you press the action key.

OK. Managed to get the game running after a LOT of tinkering around.
When I double click the "Fallout New Vegas" shortcut on my desktop and am presented with the "Play", "Data Files" etc..... screen, I would normally click "Play" and the program would crash. What I have found that if I go to the "Settings" and tell the game to run 'windowed' then the game runs OK. I then quit out of the game and went through the process again, but this time told it to go back to full screen again and Presto! It now works every time.
PC's eh? Don't you just love 'em!?!?

If you try running it in fullscreen again without changing to windowed first after quitting the game what happens, same thing?

No. I can now reboot and play fullscreen straight away.
Kiss of death, but I may have solved the issue.
Thanks for all the help people! I'll probably be back soon with a fresh problem :).
