"Player Authored" Storytelling

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 8:26 am

Just watched an interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj_HstA1ob8&feature=youtu.be&hd=1&t=21m50sby David Jaffe about what he calls "player authorship" and storytelling in games. The reception to his presentation has been somewhat mixed, but essentially he seems to be arguing in favor of games where the player takes a much more active role in the storytelling throughout the course of the game, as opposed to games with lots of cut scenes where the type of interaction is more passive.

At any rate, he called Dishonored a "very heavily player authored game," which I think bodes very well for Dishonored, suggesting that the storytelling will be more fluid and expressed primarily through the course of actually playing the game rather than segmented gameplay interrupted by frequent cut scenes.

I think the guy who really has it right, and I think he's one of the smartest designers working in games, is Harvey Smith. And he did Deus Ex, which is one of my favorite games, and it basically really speaks to player authorship and stories via gameplay.

And the guy just wrote a novel and he's also making a very heavily player authored game right now...

Okay enough, just give me the game already, I want a new stealth dose, especially since I finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution, give it to me.

BTW I would like to add, Harvey Smith on twitter has been posting pics about Dishonored Event taking place today, so probably we will get some media coverage, maybe some footage of gameplay too.

The idea of shared authorship dates back quite a ways, and Deus Ex is probably still one of the best examples of it. Provide story for context and then give the player multiple gameplay systems that can be used to accomplish their goals. Extra points if the narrative and characters acknowledge the choices the player is making.

Still, I'm glad that people like Cliffy B* and David Jaffe are finally acknowledging what we've known for years.

You can expect more coverage on the game next week.

I'll have to check out Jaffe's presentation (he's one of my favorites in the industry), but it sounds like an apt description of Dishonored.

If you need a stealth dose I'd recommend a stealth build in Dark Messiah, that's waht I'm doing in order to keep my hype up.

Yes, please. I'm so tired of pressing buttons just so I can progress a movie. :(

I expect Dishonored will be much more my flavour of game. :D
