Player Variation Suggestion

Post » Sat Dec 14, 2013 5:54 pm

Firstly, Sorry if this has been mentioned somewhere before.

When I first played Lotro (having already played Wow) I assumed that tanks would be in high demand,

So that was the class I made, only to find when I leveled up that 1/2 the people I met were also tanks.

( and the other 1/2 were male elvish hunters named "Legolas" or "Legaloos" or "or Legyless" )

I think everyone ( Including Dev's) want max variation among players.

I can't speak for everyone but If the information was available to me...

My faction, race and class choices would depend ( fully or in part ) on current player percentages.

If I see...

blue: 20%

red: 45%

yellow: 35%

I'm picking blue

Same thing would go for race ( within faction ) and class ( within faction )

This would only apply to character creation (those 3 choices)

I've no idea how difficult this would be to implement, nor why it would be a negative thing

Input anyone?

Is it possible?

Is there a negative?

Would YOU choose the rarer faction?

P.S. I see this helping PVP balance the most

Oh, I'm sorry..

I mean,

When I first open the game, on the character creation screen for the first time

The game tells me what percentage of players are on each faction before I choose

Numbers don't come into it, I'll make a character I want to play as and will have fun with. I like Bosmer, so that is a strong possibility. Doesn't matter to me whether 10% or 90% of people also picked that same race, when it comes down to it, I need to make a character that I can play as and enjoy for a long time.

Although what I would want to know, is what race/faction my friends were in, so that we could play together. No point me being a lonely Bosmer if all my mates that I want to play with are Dunmer!

Well part of the problem is that a lot of the "balancing", is already happening right now as guilds discuss and decide on factions. There's also the problem that when people* see something like the numbers your showing, they go: "Why are there so few blue? are they under powered? are they boring? surely if they where awesome more people would play them... better play it safe and pick Red."

On the bright side ZOS marketing seems to have a thing for the DC :D (at least in the new PvP trailer)

*not all, but in my experience, more then the ones jumping the other way.

I agree with the points made by both epona and lilrys, ( especialy the pre-determined guild thing )

As in the example I mentioned, I would not have made a tank in Lotro if I was told they where common on that server

getting 5 tanks and 1 healer together and calling it a group svcked.

With the open-ended skill system classes are not as relavent here, but pvp balance is.

I didn't really consider the whole "they must be under-powered" thing. - good point

As an individual player joining up, I would choose the smaller faction, mabye thats just me.

In wow unbalanced PvP servers was an serious problem, if you wanted to play alliance you would not want to be on an server with 70% horde but it would draw horde players and the balance would shift to horde.

Now this is not so relevant here but show that selecting the largest faction has benefits.

Since there is no actual "tank-healer" thing ingame, it's hard I think.

A typical tank does not exist for instance because you can't get aggro of a group.

But I would also go for the one most in demand, not sure what that will be.
