Playing a no magic character....suggestions needed.

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 3:08 am

Ok, as a perennial restarter, I have finally hit upon a play style I enjoy. Which is the no magic build.

When I say no magic, I mean no spells, no enchantments on armor or weapons and no potions. I do accept blessings though, and use some stones (atronach is just to OP). And no eating food in combat. (So lots of beef stew, horker stew and vegetable soup).

Anyway, I got up my Nord character to where he is pretty reasonable using archery, sneak, light armor and board and sword. Arrows to attract attention, snipe some health or kill trash mobs, Axe and shield to face tough guys, because Nords do not run...

But I have hit a problem. I much prefer 2 handed weapons than sword and board. Which, because the prevalence of magic, the mighty block perk to resist elemental damage is king.

So my question is, since I do not consider most racial powers magic, and I am flexible, which is the best race to play, considering I want to use 2 handed weapons?

Argonian for histskin? Orc for berserker rage? Breton for magic resistance and dragon skin? (though I do not like dragon skin, feels too spell like). Any thoughts?

And NO COMPANIONS.

Give an Orc a warhammer and Berserker Rage, and you're going to kill a lot of things. Plus they get fantastic warrior starting bonuses - +10 to Heavy Armour, and +5 to 2 Handed, 1 Handed, Smithing, and Blocking.

Obviously Breton for magic resistance. That + Mara's Blessing is 40% magic res, not too shabby. Dragonskin gives you Atronach for 60 seconds, for when you're really in a tight spot but don't want to cheese with the stone.

I would suggest an Orc as well. Redguard would not go far wrong either, they are warriors who don't have much truck with magic (though they will accept healing and destruction because it's useful). Beserker rage, highly useful. Adrenalin rush is handy as well, especially if you are two handing it. An extra power attack can be good... But overall Beserker is just hands down better. Nord would not be a bad choice either, but since your last character was one, you may not want to go that way again.

Also, are you on PC or console? If you are on PC and not opposed to modding, I suggest Wolferoo's Cooking mod. It doesn't have the high end potion levels of healing, but you can make better food than the standard fare, so you don't have to carry 100lbs of cooked meat and soup. You can ignore the buff foods if you feel they are to potion like. It is very handy for my Nord warrior who wouldn't know a blue mountain flower from a nightshade...

If you don't care about skill bonuses at the start then go with an Argonian.
You'll get hit a lot so 50% disease resistance is good, but it's Histskin which is the highlight, health regeneration 10x faster for 60 secs is an excellent power for warriors.
Plus it's just fun to break stereotype, isn't it? Suit that lizard up in heavy armour.

You can Block with a 2 Handed Weapon, won't this Perk work with that style? I am not one who does much blocking so I have not explored this skill much.

Altmer for difficulty. Then go back and try it in Morrowind and Obliblimans, fail horribly, and cry.

I use an Orc 2h warrior, and I must say that Beserker Rage is win! I also use no magic, or enchantments, but I do use potions. I'm having much fun.
