Playing the opposite gender in games

Post » Sun Jul 14, 2013 6:16 am

I was just wondering who else plays the opposite gender in videogames.

Not exclusively, but sometimes.

I recently got some flak from my dudebro roommate because I'm playing a female character in dragon age: origins.

For me, I like to play women characters if it has an impact on the story.

For instance, I think playing as Female Shepard in Mass Effect is more enjoyable than Male Shepard.

I'm currently playing a female City Elf Rogue in Dragon Age because I like the story and roleplay aspects of it.

In games where it barely makes a difference like Skyrim, Fallout, MMOs, etc. I usually just stick with a male character.

This thread has probably been done to death, but its Saturday, I'm stuck at my parent's house, and I'm bored as hell.

Discuss!

In a game with a romantic interest like Mass Effect I'll usually play a male character. In most other RPGs I'll usually play a female character.

Unless theres a major difference in Character like Mass effect, I play whatever.

Mainly male characters though.

In single character games- never. I started old-school (DOS AD&D) where females took a stat hit. I always had one or two in my party, because it felt right, but I can't identify with one as my sole character.

I play as both male and female characters. I don't think I have a dominant gender I roll with in RPGs and such, but it all depends on the character I'm creating.

Makes no difference to me who or what I play as. I've played male and female characters, I've even played as a homosixual character once. That RP turned out to be one of my favorite RP's...until a corrupt save killed him off. :swear:

With most games I play the opposite six anyway by default. But I don't mind either way. Female, male, trans, third gender, eunuch, gay, straight, pansixual, etc. The point of a game is to get in someone else's head and escape your own for a bit.

Female armor in a lot of games pisses me off, though, so I'll go male since I can't stand bikini armor. We also need more androgynous characters.

Both. Unless i'm given an option to have a lisbian relationship, then I go female.

If the character is mean't to be a self-insert: Male

If the women have better character design: Female

I play both equally.
It's just another way to experience different aspects of the game, or make choices based on a different set of criteria.

Some games it's for aesthetics. I almost always play a female in Dark Souls because I think their animations are better, and certain armor looks better on them.

I'm a man so I prefer to play as one as I better relate to them and therefore can get more immersed in their character...I have no problem playing as a woman though, it's just harder to get a feel for her character and such.

I play a female character occasionally, though it has to be a second playthrough for it to happen, as I tend to make whatever character I want on my first playthrough, which for some reason always seems to be male. Maybe I should try a female first playthrough.

Though when I play an MMO, I'll go with male always. I don't like making myself appear to others as a female when I know it's not true.

BTW, how does third genders work?

I don't like this way of thinking about it. A character's gender should only be that, and doesn't have to be reflective of the gender of the player or how they want to be seen.

probably 90% of the time I'll play male, but I do occasionally play a female character.

I find it weird personally, but I won't hold it against someone unless they do it for the creepy as hell sixual fun of it. I identify better with the PC better if they're male since I am a male, therefore I can identify genderwise better than a female PC.

It's how I think of the person behind the monitor by default. I see a female character, I assume the player is a female, even though that is possibly not true. I think that in MMOs or other multiplayer games, the character should reflect the player as much as possible, or at least share similar biological traits.

But that is my opinion, and my opinions are known to be stupid.

Isn't it popular in MMOs for some classes to be gender specific, like all elves are female and all warrior's are men and such?

Yeah, it is. I can expect a female-exclusive race to be played by a male (I know I would, if I liked the race), but when it comes to bi-gender races, I assume that the gender of the character = the gender of the player. I mean, why would a guy want to play a female human? That sounds boring to me.

Some do it for roleplay, either in groups or in their heads. I RP in Skyrim and Fallout in my head. I never use a female PC, but it's just fun to make up stories. Others may be male by birth but use a female PC as an extension of their psychological self, others simply want to oggle a female PC. There's lots of reasons some choose to play as the opposite six. So long as they don't find some weird sixual thrill out of it, I see no harm in someone playing as the opposite six.

I have no problem with it, either. That's just how my brain translates/conjures an image of the player, I guess.

I still have no idea how the third gender works. :P

I don't identify with any of my characters, whether male or female. I don't think of it as roleplaying, but as me controlling a third-party.

I can't explain it to you. It's easier to understand than explain, for me anyway. It makes perfect sense to me. Maybe someone here can put it in a simple way for you, but I can't.

@Narmy- I meant to bring up those who just see their PC as a husk to control, but I forgot to put it in.
