I couldn't find a thread for this, so...

Free fan-made Wing Commander game... 10 years in the making, released today, looks pretty amazing.

Nice, have some of the old wing commander here still, one in original package(box),and another one was with a collection of games.
Remember a joystick worked best there, doubt that one work 100% now, sure it works somewhat but guess a fully working gamepad is nearly as good.
Will follow this

off to browse through bags filled with old cd-roms  It is cold out there too,oh my,what sacrifices one does for games

Does it continue from 4? The spacecrafts design seems to start from there. I recall WC 5 had some new fighters that didn't show in that site. My long time favourite Longbow is there, I loved to run into those puny fighters with full front shield and afterburner on :P

The trailer was cool but didn't show any gameplay.

It's same as the old Wing Commander space cockpit fight.

Have played a few missions now, it's difficult! I don't remember the old games being this tough, or maybe I'm just getting old.

The story takes place at the same time as WC3, with ships from that era.

Currently downloading it, looking forward to give it a try. The original Wing Commander is one of my favorite games of all time, and I've played thru it lots of times.

Currently stuck on a long prologue mission. Again and again it reminds me of why I hate the lack of mid-mission checkpoints in many space combat sims

Still, frustration at having to restart long missions aside, it seems solid. The prologue is very high quality, and I haven't even started the main campaign yet.

Have you tried rearranging energy output according to your playstyle? I haven't tried it yet since I downloaded it cause I don't have time for it lately, but back in WC 3/4 I changed energy quite frequently for different missions and different fighters. It makes a whole lot different to different foes you fighting. My personal preference is to put 50% to shield then 5% to weapon and 45% to engine, that makes ramming and missile dodging a lot more fun.

Do you know there's also an auto slide technique so you can fly sideways?

Yeah, I just started adjusting power - I tend to give shields a little extra, especially against capships, it helps a lot.

I have never used the slide technique, will look into that.

This game is FUN! They have really caught that Wing Commander feeling. Most fun I've had gaming in a while... I want to go to university and get some work done today, I really do, but then who will fight the Kilrathi?
