Pony Time!

Hi there my fellow forumgoers, I happen to be in a bit of a bind right now. You see, I need to conduct a survey as a part of a research presentation for my Psychology class, but it is due in 2 days (procrastination, other work, etc) and I don't have enough time or people to pull off a normal survey. Yikes. Anyways, my research topic is the Psychology of Music, but more specifically, I am studying how it relates to memory. So if you would be so kind, can you listen to a song and answer a few questions about it? Don't worry, it isn't Mozart or anything. No, its better. Does the name Indiana Jones ring any bells? Well if you haven't actually seen the movie before, then thank you for reading this far, but you unfortunately cannot take part in this survey. :( But if you have, please take a listen to this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgncJgSbbck

Now would you kindly please answer the questions below?

Spoiler

1. Do you recognize the song?
2. Which part of the song, thinking back, do you find the most memorable? The beginning, middle or end?
3. Can you describe the opening scene where the song was played?
4. What kind of feelings does hearing the song bring back? Positive, negative, other?
5. Would you say that you feel nostalgia hearing this song again?
6. Do you remember who you first saw the movie with?
7. Do you remember where you first saw it?
8. Has the tune ever gotten "stuck" in your head?
9. Have you ever found yourself randomly humming or whistling the tune?
10. At any point during the song did you feel any music chills (goosebump/shivering feeling you get when a note hits just right)? Do you remember if you felt them before?
11. Do you enjoy the song?

Some guidelines while answering the questions...

Spoiler

1. You can listen to the track as many times as you want while answering, but only after completing question 2.
2. Please do not edit your post, I'll try to make sense of any errors.
3. When answering 6 and 7, you don't have to list any specific facts. Example: I first saw it with Jake Gyllenhaal my dad.
4. Please post your response in spoiler tags. If you don't know how to make them, here is an example of spoiler tags to wrap around your post. [spoiler][/spoilNuka Colaer] Remove the Nuka Cola to make the spoiler tag.
5. Please refrain from looking at other peoples replies until you post yours.

Thanks a million for filling this out. It means a lot to me, seeing as this is a really big assignment and I am very sensitive about getting A's in college (failing this would get me a C+ overall). Sorry I can't give anything return, given that this is the internet, but please accept my sincerest gratitude and a cheerful emoticon. :hugs:

Wow, thanks for the replies so far! I wasn't sure if this was "forum material" or not. Let's see how many more replies come in; I am hoping for as many as possible by Thursday night, but I would be content with at least 10 more. I might even have to pull out another emoticon.

Interesting.

Spoiler

1. Do you recognize the song? -- Yes
2. Which part of the song, thinking back, do you find the most memorable? The beginning, middle or end? -- When the trumpet starts at :07 to :36. I think it repeats or reprises towards the middle as well.
3. Can you describe the opening scene where the song was played? -- I can describe the opening scene (the cave/temple/gold statue/big boulder/snakes on a plane) but I don't recall where the song was actually 1st played. Probably near the end?
4. What kind of feelings does hearing the song bring back? Positive, negative, other? -- Sense of "can do" adventure/spirit.
5. Would you say that you feel nostalgia hearing this song again? -- Yes
6. Do you remember who you first saw the movie with? -- I want to say my mother but it could have been a few other people instead. So, no.
7. Do you remember where you first saw it? -- Not in terms of exactly which theater, no. It's been 30ish years...
8. Has the tune ever gotten "stuck" in your head? -- No
9. Have you ever found yourself randomly humming or whistling the tune? -- Not randomly or out of the blue. Sometimes if watching a movie with a similar type scene/setting I'll "sing" it as a joke reference.
10. At any point during the song did you feel any music chills (goosebump/shivering feeling you get when a note hits just right)? Do you remember if you felt them before? -- No, and not in the past either
11. Do you enjoy the song? -- Yes, but it's not one that I'd listen to on repeat for very long.

Thank you for some more replies guys! Some trends I am noticing so far:

EDIT: I just realized that saying things the things I noticed may influence later replies. Might as well keep my observations until I feel I have enough data.

Spoiler

1. Yes I definitely do.
2. Middle
3. Indiana was walking through the jungle with some local guides. He and someone else go into a cave, they use his whip to swing across a chasm and he uses a bag of sand to deftly transfer a golden idol off of a pressure plate. One of them then steps on a pressure plate that causes a little bit of a ruckus to go on in the temple so they runs back to the chasm. The other guy swings to the other side of the chasm, betrays Indiana and runs off with the idol. Indiana manages to find another way out while being chased by a giant rock. He finds the scumbag dead(pierced with many poison darts), he runs through the jungle while being chased by dozens of natives and he makes it to a river. He signals the pilot of the floating plane(who's fishing unsuccessfully) to start getting ready to take off. Indiana jumps into the water and starts swimming toward the plane while the natives are firing darts at him(missing more then stormtroopers) and he makes it to the plane unharmed. They take off, Indiana finds a snake in his seat(of which he is very afraid of) and it cuts to black.
4. Positive
5. Yes, definitely.
6. Not exactly, but I think it was on VHS with my brother. I was much younger.
7. Yes, in the old house where I grew up.
8. Only right after I see an Indiana Jones movie.
9. Yes I have, though it inexplicably gets replaced with the A-Team theme eventually.(I have no idea why)
10. I do whenever I hear it for the first time in a while.
11. Yes I very much do, as I'm typing this I am just about to restart it for the third time.

Spoiler
1. Yes
2. The main melody, irrespective of the progression through the piece
3. I recall indy running away from his rival and an indigenous tribe.
4. Neither. I don't usually attatch emotions to remembered sound or vision, rather the events that took place. However, when I hear something at the time I am greatly affected by it.
5. No, although it was only recently I saw indiana jones. This might mean the only relation the music played was a sort of psychological anchor to a particular part of the film, rather than something that stimulated my memory over a considerable period of time.
6. Yes, I saw it alone. Films are a solitary experience for me, as I like to focus purely on them in a darkened room with headphones
7. Yes, I saw it at home.
8. No, not as of yet.
9. As above, no.
10. I did not experience chills. However, I frequently experience them when listening to blues, jazz and classical music, as those genres elicit the strongest emotional response from me. Some examples below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8Ke5KcTBNk- Yesterdays by Benny Golson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvxS_bJ0yOU Frederic Chopin's Nocturne, Op 9 No 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y8QxOjuYHg BB King's Lucille
I am particularly fond of BB King, as should be obvious my my profile pic. I find his music cuts right to one's soul. (insofar as a "soul" can be claimed to exist)

11. I did not particularly enjoy it out of its context as a film's theme, however I think it does a good job in conjunction with the film.

EDIT: I have edited out your questions, I put them at the top of my post when writing it for my convenience.

Spoiler
1. Of course!

2. The theme, which appears more than once throughout the song.

3. You mean the first scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark? The first time I remember it being played is when he jumps on to the plane and gets away from the "natives", but it could've been played in the temple while he's stealing the thing. I can't remember.

4. Positive. I've loved that theme since childhood, I often find myself whistling it for no reason.

5. Somewhat, but I watched the films again quite recently (1-2 months) and mostly I was thinking of that.

6. Probably my mum, or on my own. I recorded them from TV and watched them often.

7. My living room, presumably, where the TV in our house was.

8. All the time, especially after watching the films. That's why I end up whistling/singing it so much.

9. Oh, er, yeah, as I already mentioned.

10. No.

11. Of course!

Yeah, that is precisely why I picked it, because I needed some people here to know it as well as the people in my class, seeing that my project is actually a presentation that I need to give tomorrow. I'll take a look at the video a bit later, because I am on my phone now.

And yes your reply (and everyone else's) helped me tremendously. You all are amazing for helping me out, and I thank you for the help again. :cookie:

Let's see if we can get some more replies in the next couple hours, to make the results even more accurate. :)

Tomorrow? Oh dear. You should be at your laptop/desktop now, typing like a maniac, not on the phone. :P

It was my pleasure, just let us know how it went and buy us all a pint if you pass (okay, there may be some practical problems :P). I remained brief in my answers, because I thought that's how you'd like it.

If I may ask, what level of studies are we talking about here? A BA at Uni? The link I posted refers to something that lends itself well to philosophical topics. I wrote a major assignment on it myself a number of years ago. Now I feel old remembering that.
