Re-installed the drivers after an uninstall and a sweeper cleaning in Safe Mode. Result was that texture pop-in is still present, but only for one 'pass', then it clears up, but because the freezing still remains (every few seconds and lasts roughly double the time between freezing) I cannot accurately tell if the slow texture load is due to the freezing causing sudden and sharp movement (think still frame pictures) or due to the game just not texturing until a 'first pass.' My only real avenue that I see left, short of waiting on a developer solution, is a complete re-install of the game, as that at least got me able to roam around well (with texture issues; didn't have the .cfg when I re-installed it). The only problem I can see doing that all over again, aside from time spent, is that the freezing came back when I exited and then opened the game a second time. Now I did discover that my brother is running with 8 Gb of RAM, to my 4, and that seems to be the biggest difference between my PC and his (which, as I've mentioned before, is running the game just about flawlessly; he has some slow down and tearing issues when talking to people behind counters). I'm not entirely sure that would be the cause of the huge difference in this situation, but it's something. Tomorrow we're thinking about swapping the video cards to see if it's possible my 5850 is not working correctly and his is.
With all of that aside, I'm hoping for some news as to a culprit behind the freezing, or something to narrow it down, and if anyone has any ideas, I'm open to try them. I suppose I'll start in on a second re-install of RAGE, just to be extra thorough. Over 12 hours of nothing but troubleshooting a game I pre-ordered. I'm confident things will get worked out in the end, but I can't help but have it start getting to me. Anyway, I hope the game was worth it to those that got everything squared away. Hopefully I'll be able to do the same.
