Possible fix for texture pop in (works for most)

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 6:57 am

Over at the Steam forums a user has posted a fix to try for texture pop in on the PC. He mentioned he found the info somewhere (not sure where to give credit) but this fix significantly or Totally fixes texture pop in for most users with nVidia (possibly ATI as well) cards.

Enjoy. :) ... Its like a totally different game now.

Works for most people, both AMD and Nvidia users.

Hey Xzi, not sure if you're still watching, hope you are, but I went to the link and for the life of me my browsers will not bring up Mediafire at all. Is there any chance you, or someone that has the files for 512Mb-1.5Gb, 2+Gb, and/or the 2-3Gb (referenced further into the post), could either put them up somewhere, or paste the contents of each into this thread so users can create their own?

EDIT: Third file, and link, mentioned is redundant. Second listed link in the opening post is the 2-3Gb file I referenced to.

create a new file called rageconfig.cfg place in rage/base folder , these makes the textures 16k x 16k, try 8192 for 8k textures, default is roughly 4k textures.

Okay, so is that the direct contents of the .cfg file mentioned in the posts? If so, which VRAM size is it (512-1.5 or 2+)?

EDIT: Well, here goes nothing. Starting it now.

Great find, texture popping is non-existent on my system but I still have the aggravating stutter/freeze.

had to lower mine to the 8192, since blue artifacts could be seen due to the textures being too large. No pop-in was detected though. Ill report back with findings of the 8192 settings.

Well, I still had texture pop-in, but it seemed (I couldn't tell too well since the freezing/stuttering was still very much present) that after the game loaded a texture, it didn't need to repeat it. I'm going to try and re-install the drivers to see if I get anything new. It's possible (slim) that it all needs a good, fresh restart on all fronts before it comes in line with each other. I'll be sure to come back with my findings.

^ this is the 2GB version ... you want 1/2 those values for the 0.5-1.5GB version.

WOW, this is a major, major improvement. Freezing is basically gone. There is still the occasional stutter but nothing like it was before. Its actually quite playable now and there appears to be no texture popping. I just got inside the cave area for the first time. The dark areas are green rather than black. Weird.

This basically fixes the texture popping for my 5850 as well. But I'm still getting 2-5 second freezes every 15 seconds or so.

This, but I'm using a 6850. The texture issue is MUCH better but the game is still unplayable. 2-3 sec freezes every 10 sec or so. Some areas 2-3 sec freezes every 5 sec or so.

Re-installed the drivers after an uninstall and a sweeper cleaning in Safe Mode. Result was that texture pop-in is still present, but only for one 'pass', then it clears up, but because the freezing still remains (every few seconds and lasts roughly double the time between freezing) I cannot accurately tell if the slow texture load is due to the freezing causing sudden and sharp movement (think still frame pictures) or due to the game just not texturing until a 'first pass.' My only real avenue that I see left, short of waiting on a developer solution, is a complete re-install of the game, as that at least got me able to roam around well (with texture issues; didn't have the .cfg when I re-installed it). The only problem I can see doing that all over again, aside from time spent, is that the freezing came back when I exited and then opened the game a second time. Now I did discover that my brother is running with 8 Gb of RAM, to my 4, and that seems to be the biggest difference between my PC and his (which, as I've mentioned before, is running the game just about flawlessly; he has some slow down and tearing issues when talking to people behind counters). I'm not entirely sure that would be the cause of the huge difference in this situation, but it's something. Tomorrow we're thinking about swapping the video cards to see if it's possible my 5850 is not working correctly and his is.

With all of that aside, I'm hoping for some news as to a culprit behind the freezing, or something to narrow it down, and if anyone has any ideas, I'm open to try them. I suppose I'll start in on a second re-install of RAGE, just to be extra thorough. Over 12 hours of nothing but troubleshooting a game I pre-ordered. I'm confident things will get worked out in the end, but I can't help but have it start getting to me. Anyway, I hope the game was worth it to those that got everything squared away. Hopefully I'll be able to do the same.

Still green. The driver probably isn't using the lighting engine properly.
