I like it myself but you do have to be aware of your surroundings and range vs enemies. In a close quarter fight it can be a problem at times, but even with that issue I still like the perk. It is useful to take a minor in a close range fighting skill such as Unarmed or Melee Weapons. You don't have to do this, mind you, but it eliminates any concerns about self-immolation. Anything that charges you and makes it into your personal space, just whip out your trusty knife or fist weapon and you'll be golden. Most enemies tend to not make it into close range vs you on a proper Energy Weapons build in my view, but ymmv on that one.
Still, even with those concerns there's nothing quite like using a single precise sniper shot to cause a massive chain reaction that takes out a half dozen Fiends milling around.
