What I meant to say earlier is that to become a god someone has to believe you are a god. Otherwise you're just an unnaturally long-lived freak, right?

Yes, a god is a religious figure, and must therefore have followers/a realm/ect.... If you have a bunch of immortal folks of infinite power sitting in a void, they're not gods, they're just a bunch of immortal folks of infinite power sitting in a void; now if you throw in there a mortal of finite power so that the others can be acknowledged, they then become gods...
