Dark Messiah was a very interesting game, although it lacked depth. Like others have said, it wasn't just the combat system itself, but the interaction with the environment that made the game fun.

I think a combination of Mount&Blade's mouse directional melee swing/block system (archery and mounted combat too), kicking/bashing + finishers from Deadly Reflex and Dark Messiah, along with some dodging and stealth kills would make an ideal combat system.

This may just be my view, but I think that would be really kick-ass!

I'd like a combat system where at least you didn't take damage from blocking an attack with your sword. That seems...well...pointless. Kicking, for me, would add too much confusion, but definitely some fine tuning. Being stunned from hitting a shield, I dunno, that seems a little weird too. If you're fighting an opponent who's good with a shield I imagine you'd be out of balance after he deflects your attack rather than being stunned. A good pair of gauntlets should take care of any 'back-lash' you may get from a poor hit.
