Made a new character, now the old one is gone

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:33 am

So I had a level 18 character but since the main storyline quest I'm on was bugged and I couldn't progress any farther I started a new character until Bethesda decides to fix it. I looked it up online and people were saying that 2 characters at once is possible, as long as you manually save the new character. So after I did my first manual save my old level 18 character was gone...what is the logic in that? Can anyone tell me how to fix this if there is anyway to get my old character back? Or how you can manage to play 2 characters at the same time on a single gamer profile? Bethesda is really screwing up on this game, its fun and all just stupid stuff like this and the main story quests really grind my gears, at least I have AC Revelations to play....

You have to manage and pay attention to your saves, I always save twice when switching characters, just in case.

Always have a backup save, you can make a manual save to make a seperate chracter its just up to you to keep track of that save.

This must be a console thing. I have six characters going with dozens of saves for each one.

Sorry that you are having these issues. If the game over wrote your only save and you have no auto saves or a quick save then you're out of luck getting your old save game back.

You mean you have dozens of saves, each with a different character right? There are no characters anymore, only saved games. Which is silly.

What? What are you even talking about?

TES games have never had character specific saves on consoles, or PC for that matter. The only thing PC has is the ability to name your own saves. Honestly it's not THAT hard to keep track of your save games, I'm on PS3 and I routinely go through them and delete old ones, backup current ones, and decide if I want to keep different characters at all.

Save game files aren't dependent on the character, which can create problems. I lost some progress twice now because I'm used to using the quicksave slot. If I don't remember to create a new save file manually before changing characters and if I quicksave on the other, then the first one is replaced.

However, you should be able to recover the first even if you miss some progress. Look for the latest "autosave" save file with your other character. It might be a little earlier than your last quicksave but no big deal.

If this is on a console, then it might not work like this. I'm playing on the pc.

If you're playing on PS3 there's a save bug that causes this. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1284552-confirmed-new-character-will-overwrite-previious-save/page__st__40__p__19434455__fromsearch__1#entry19434455

This happend to me too, although it was only a level 8 mage. What you just have to do is SAVE right before you go into character creation, then once you have your new character and everything, make a new save. Whenever you want to make a new character, Load the save from before character creation. For some reason, doing new game erases all save files :/

Not tying to sound like a d*ck, but that's your fault, not Bethesda's. You must of accidentally saved over your other character some how, it happened to me while playing oblivion, I made a new character, and accidentally saved over my level 20 Battlemage, right after finishing the Shivering Isles quest, I know how you feel, I was extremely pissed.

Not a console thing, I have about 6 or so characters.

OP probably overwrote his old save with the new one.

Your fault. I always use backup saves for my Khajiit. I refuse to lose him to some idiotic oversight on my part. Too bad-ass of a roleplayer!

It cannot be a console thing because I also have a dozen separate character saves on my 360. Sounds like an individual problem.

Sorry, OP. :(

Not sure why there can't be a character select screen that keeps track of the saves for that character. Not sure many people only ever play a single character and all the saves are just lumped together. Sifting through them is silly to me.
