I get what he's saying. He's not against mods, he just wishes that Skyrim will be bearable in it's vanilla form a few years up the road, whereas Oblivion is just unplayable without mods.
Hmm. Guess it all depends on point of view.
My set of "needs this to function" mods is quite small, honestly. DaRN UI, a couple minor interface bits (like removing the map markers of closed Gates), and a level scaling fix (I typically use Francesco's). Not very large, size-wise. And with easy to use custom installers.
The vast majority of mods I install are "optional" things, like body replacers, quests, and armor.
