Did they change the release date?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 4:02 am

Am I correct in thinking that if you are playing on PC, that even if the retailer sells the box to you today, you still won't be able to play it for another day and a half, because Steam will enforce the unlock date for all PC versions of the game?

Only 1 day, 2 hours left in the UK.

Most pre orders will be delivered tomorrow (thursday), so most people can start playing at midnight.

Makes sense doesnt it?

Yup.

If you bought it on Steam you can actually download it now even. I have a desktop shortcut to Skyrim :P

You just can't play until someone flips the unlock switch, which is supposed to happen in about 32 and a half hours.

First time buying a video game OP?

Some stores invariably break street date. This is nothing new, its been happening since the 80s.
Nope, sorry...Not a first time buyer, to burst your bubble.

I never have ordered them via mail, usually go get them myself or D2D.

Computer > PS3/XBOX anyway. :)

Anyhow, even if they decided to be really nice to their fans and unlocked early on Steam, it wouldn't do me much good - I haven't planned much in the way of free time until Friday (took Friday off from work as a vacation day). Although, it'd be swell if I could start the installation/unlock process on steam at like 7:30 am or whenever I wake up, instead of having to wait until 10am. The 10am unlock means that the morning's almost over by the time I can even start the installation. Sheesh.

Yes, steam is the mechanism that is holding up PC people from playing. All PC versions require steam so how you got the pc version is irrelevant in this regard.

Steam would need Bethesda to null their street date contract to release the game sooner. its a bethesda decision, not a steam decision. The street date only exists so that all retail outlets can sell the game on the same day. if Steam was allowed to unlock the game now, it would royally screw the stores because everyone would just get it off steam so they can play it earlier.

Some people can be really jealous eh?
Not jealous at all. It's called inquiring.

Please stay on topic, thanks.

.. they aren't breaking a law, they're breaking a contract. It comes with a fine, so no worries.

Contract law exists.

It's just a matter for civil court, though, not a criminal offense.

Well put me down as one who would quickly run to my local retailers if they broke the street date, unfortunately they will not
I would do the exact opposite. I would cancel all my preorders with the store, and go where they stick to the street date.

Any Australians here who have preordered their copy through GAME? I'm wondering if we'll be part of the "90%" who get it on Thursday like the UK members.

Sure, contract law exists, but when you breach a contract, you're breaking the contract itself, not contract law.

Breaking contract law would be something like writing an unenforceable contract.

In any case, though, it is still a purely civil matter. The thing that I think confuses people is that often things which could be purely civil are in fact against criminal law. Theft, for example, could be resolved as a purely civil matter (sue to get your stuff back or otherwise compensated, case closed) but is a crime. Of course in that case the idea is we want to reduce theft for the benefit of us all, so we up the penalties.

Release date breaking isn't exactly a huge threat to society and can and should be handled as no more than a breach of contract: Go ahead and breach if you want, no criminal penalty, but be prepared for the consequence outlined in the contract. Nothing immoral or illegal about it, it's just one more scenario laid out in the contract or otherwise handled by contract law.

As far as I'm concerned that is just as bad as breaking the law.
lol, get real, someone pulls a knife on you and demands your money, THAT'S a crime
Someone breaks into Bethesda, steals computers and original code, maybe harms folk in the process, that's a crime.

Please, please DO NOT inflate, confuse and trash the seriousness of real, horrible crimes with this, unless yer being obviously humorous, hm? :)
Bethesda maybe ticked off over this, they may see it as free advertizing,t hey may sue for breach of contract, but nobody is hurt or having their business ruined.

Sorry to be a downer, just that real crime *svcks*, unlike being in the TES Thieves Guild, hehe.

yeah, what these stores have done is UNETHICAL, not IMMORAL, and thus, huge difference.

I would be terrified of Zenimax lawyers. They seem to pounce quickly on people breaking laws. I hope those that get penalized have deep pockets.

It has always been like this the only difference is games grew bigger and bigger so we can tell who gets it quicker now. It wasnt a big deal back then but now its a becoming a problem and more people are paying attention. Like people said its cash to the stores that sell it early. Everyone complaining its really not the people fault just the store. If you went someone and they said you could buy skyrim would you say no? You wouldnt.
