The day one patch. Your thoughts?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 1:01 am

It tells me that they rushed the game, just like I thought they would when they announced the hard date of 11-11-11. On top of that you have the graphics problems as well on the XBox when installing the game to the Hard Drive.

This is why you don't give hard firm dates. You tend to rush things and miss simple things, like those that have to now be patched on day 1.
Really? Because I seem to remember hearing about Skyrim being finished like 2 weeks ago. They still had a decent amount of time to finish if they were falling behind. They've worked for 3 years on this game, and you think they've missed some things that a little more time could have fixed? Besides, they could always push the game back. A lot of people here would respect that decision to make the game better at the expense of a little bit of time. Like I posted above, they've had time to bug fix since the game has been finished.

I'm sure most of you folks have heard by now that Skyrim will be recieving a day one patch that "fixes some minor stability and quest progression issues". Yeah, I know. A day one patch isn't a new concept and they've been released for many games in the past, but it doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. Is this just a prelude to a glitchy future for Skyrim? I certainly hope not, but Fallout 3 gives me a bad feeling. And none of this matters because I won't be downloading the patch in the first place because I live in Deliveranceville, Mississippi, with adequate internet connectivity for my PS3 nowhere in sight. I'm sure the game will function in an acceptable manner without the patch, but what does the future hold? More patches? Glitches galore? What do you fine folks think?

No it doesn't worry me. I'm hoping it will somehow KILL all of the illegal copies floating around out there and expose those fu ckers who stole the game and couldn't even pay a measly $60. But I doubt that's the case...

Graphics problems are on the 360, not PS3. Tough [censored].

what I'm saying is that when you give a hard date almost a year out you WILL rush things when it gets closer. You WILL miss things when it gets closer. Why? Because you have painted yourself in a corner with the hard date.

They should have waited and gave a hard date when the game was closer. This way there would be no rushing and if you had to push back the date you can.

I never liked the hard date when it was announced, and I still don't. I see the results of that in the Day 1 patch and then another pach to fix the graphics problems.

The game was pretty damn close to being finished when they announced it. Skyrim is the only game I've seen that hasn't been pushed back, but that's not a bad thing. I'm not worried about the day one patch, in fact I'm excited for it.

just take it to a friends house with charter or uverse
shouldnt take more than a few mins

Yeah, I usually haul the frigging thing to my aunt's house when I get the CoD itch or when there's some DLC that needs downloading. I'm going to be going online some time after launch so I'll get the patch then. But still, I pray to the Nine that I don't run into any game-ending glitches that would've been patched. Looks like I'll be keeping eight save files as insurance.

Get better internet and the size of files will never be a concern again. I switched to the fastest speed my ISP offers and I love it.

It worries me a bit since, like you, I'm going to get my game for a console and I won't be able to download the patch. I'm hoping I will be able to get it anyway, but if not I hope the bugs the patch fixes aren't anything too serious.

Think of it this way - since you cannot play the game without the patch, think of the game being released as 1.1.....

It doesnt. I played it for 15 hours today, and i didn't find a single glitch/bug. Calm down, mississippi!

Points for the John Wayne reference

And +1

I just got LA Noire for PC. It came out for that platform yesterday, the day I bought it. The game's been out for a while for other platforms

The manual doesn;t even read 'it may patch on install'. It comes out and says "it WILL download a patch"

What's the big deal? In my opinion, the folks all bent out of shape about 1st day patches for games, especially ones that use online verification of any sort, are simply the types that want to read into every little thing. It MUST be BAD there's a 1st day patch. It SHOWS all sorts of ways they were LAZY, etc etc etc

If you don;t have internet access or its bad well, there's an issue...but isn't the game verified online even on consoles?

I can remember when developers didn't ever bother with support. Now people expect bug-free sophisticated titles, and if anything is wrong, the know it alls come out to play. The news flash is that all titles have bugs to one degree or another, but you used to just deal with it

If you think it's rushed, then just go ahead and ignore the others playing it saying it's fine, and don't buy it. It's that simple.

To me its a great sign that Bethedsa takes bug smashing seriously. Im so happy to hear they have a day one patch. I hope patching the game is a higher priority than DLCs

:D

Hey it just means they take pride in the game if they find a issue they want to fix it i happy with this

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they are fixing the game with a Day 1 patch. I'm just saying that the reason why, in my opinion, is the firm date. Also, there is no way that the game was close to being finished almost a year out. That's a hell of long time to be working on a game that is damn close to be finished.

A company should not give a release date until at LEAST 6 months before hand. I actually think a date shouldn't be given until 3 - 4 months out. It gives you a chance to delay the game a little if there are things you want to add, or things you want to fix before releasing the game.

Orly? I hadn't thought of that.
I only have dialup available in my area, there's nothing I can do about that short of winning the lottery or something and building the infrastructure myself.

I'm confident that Bethesda was ready for the release date, and I don't think the day one patch has anything to do with it. Every game I've played in the past 4 years or so has had day one patches, which is a really good thing. It would worry me if a game released now and DIDN'T have a day one patch, like Battlefield 3.

Yep I saw that update today too. I'm glad to see that they're background patching even before the game is out.
