The day one patch. Your thoughts?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 5:13 am

I'm sure most of you folks have heard by now that Skyrim will be recieving a day one patch that "fixes some minor stability and quest progression issues". Yeah, I know. A day one patch isn't a new concept and they've been released for many games in the past, but it doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. Is this just a prelude to a glitchy future for Skyrim? I certainly hope not, but Fallout 3 gives me a bad feeling. And none of this matters because I won't be downloading the patch in the first place because I live in Deliveranceville, Mississippi, with adequate internet connectivity for my PS3 nowhere in sight. I'm sure the game will function in an acceptable manner without the patch, but what does the future hold? More patches? Glitches galore? What do you fine folks think?

To me its a great sign that Bethedsa takes bug smashing seriously. Im so happy to hear they have a day one patch. I hope patching the game is a higher priority than DLCs

You don't have a choice. Let's establish that first. The patch is there waiting. It's not going away. It's a given. It's a fixed event.

The patch will happen.

So now let's ask the more important question: Would you rather have this patch, or would you rather not have this patch?

I know what I would prefer.

Did you try installing/not installing to see any difference?

I think it's good. Previously we've had to wait weeks for the 1st patch, but now, due to either Steam, Xboxlive and the similar PS3 system, they can easily small minor patches often.

I got it for PS3. But shouldn't make a huge difference.

Skyrim is such a big game that I'd be astonished if there weren't any glitches. A game has to come out eventually, it can't be bug tested forever. The day 1 patch means that Bethesda is serious about this game and continues to invest in it. So if anything a patch reassures me.

It tells me that they rushed the game, just like I thought they would when they announced the hard date of 11-11-11. On top of that you have the graphics problems as well on the XBox when installing the game to the Hard Drive.

This is why you don't give hard firm dates. You tend to rush things and miss simple things, like those that have to now be patched on day 1.

Bethesda is on the ball. This game will be their best yet I predict!

Patches are a good thing, usually. So no, it doesn't worry or distress me; I'm glad we'll be getting a patch to help fix some bugs, day 1.

because even [censored] internet service shouldnt have trouble connecting long enough to download a 50-something megabyte patch

Well lets see. Skyrim has been finished for weeks, so I would certainly hope they would go ahead and fix the bugs that they have found. If it had gone gold and released to the general public like the moment it was finished, then they wouldn't have a day one patch. It isn't a problem, it is to be expected. Just like all those "videos" "proving" werewolves in the game. Hmm, they hinted that werewolves would be a DLC, and they finished the game a long time ago. Perhaps that is footage of their DLC progress. Amazing what logic can do.

No, they didn't rush the game. Diablo II has been out for more than twelve years and it's still buggy, despite frequent patches.

If a game's release date is pushed back every time a new bug is found, no games would ever be released.

Worry me? Nope. If they can reliably patch that fast they're doing something right. If you can't patch then some of the quests might frustrate you. It amazes me how easy it is to break quests in RPGs.

I've never played a Bethesda game that wasn't full of glitches and half-finished features. Big, complex games often have all sorts of bugs, and some of them end up being more fun than the regular gameplay. Take Daggerfall as an example. Daggerfall has the worst collision detection of any Elder Scrolls game. If you levitate while crouching and touch a sloped ceiling you will usually go right through it into the void. Flying through the void has become a fun gameplay tactic for many of us. Having your quest target fall into the void before you grab the item off his corpse isn't fun, but that's what savegames are for.

Patches are not a bad thing. I wish Battlefield 3 would get patched more often.

what I'm saying is that when you give a hard date almost a year out you WILL rush things when it gets closer. You WILL miss things when it gets closer. Why? Because you have painted yourself in a corner with the hard date.

They should have waited and gave a hard date when the game was closer. This way there would be no rushing and if you had to push back the date you can.

I never liked the hard date when it was announced, and I still don't. I see the results of that in the Day 1 patch and then another pach to fix the graphics problems.

It means that after it went Gold and Bethesda celebrated, that they went back to working on the game and putting in the fixes they couldn't get in the Gold. It's all good to me.

I would rather they fix things that they've found by playtesting than just ship it and forget it.

We don't know exactly when the first versions of the game went gold, just the very last localized one.

If you look at that and the fact reviewers were getting their copies several days before that announcement.

Leaves a good bit of leeway on when it was sent to print. Just means they didn't quit working just because they had to get it out.

Striving for excellence means going that last mile and always trying make sure its the best you can.

Personally, I'm glad they capitalized on it and kept working.
