I'd probably go through a violent playthrough to figure that one out.

Probably, I did that with a "merchant" character in Oblivion as an experiment. Try it and tell us! :)

You start fighting at the very intro of the game.

As every previous TES game has involved a fair amount of fighting, and Skyrim is supposed to be a war-torn province, I doubt if you could avoid killing or at least attacking anyone.

In Oblivion I played a character that had not used violence at all in her life. When she was breaking out of prison she just ran past all of the goblins and rats and kept close to the guards. When she got out she sighed a breath of relief and kept on her way. She never hurt anyone. Although she did get attacked. But she had a companion that didn't have any qualms fighting, although she would urge her not to use violence, the companion always protected her from bandits and what not. She did eventually pick up a bow and arrow and practicing learning how to defend herself from wild animals, and even learned how to use a sword. But she never used it on a human. That game-play lasted about 90 hours before I built another player.

I read somewhere that you have to progress in the MQ just like in Oblivion (when the Oblivion gates appeared) before dragons start spawning. So if you are worried about dragons you could just probably avoid starting the MQ. I don't know first-hand, just what I read in a review somewhere.

I don't particularly remember if previous TES games allowed you to go a fully pacifist or semi-pacifist route. Spells have enabled ways to evade or have someone else fight for you but I can't remember weapons that just stop/knock out your opponent without killing them.

Vanilla Morrowind and Oblivion didn't.

Skyrim probably neither, I've asked Pete Hines and others about it. No response. On the flip side Fallout(Franchise main titles, except BGS's 3) allows you to play the entire MQ and game non-lethally.

As does Deus Ex(Except for Human Revolution's boss fights) and a handful of other games.

Yes, you can play a pacifist. Playing a pacifist that survives, however... Let us know how that goes, okay?

Though it is possible, it is highly suggested not to. The game is based on combat, the new features are not to make you pacifists but rather stronger warriors. I know they say to do what you want, but it seems a little rude to not use the features that Bethesda worked so hard on for you to use.
