lol 90% ppl here AVOID main quest as much they can, mostly till dragons start appearing.

Then everyone just do side quests.
Yea I am mainly now just collecting dragon souls and learning the shouts avoiding the rest of the main questline. I am doing faction and side quests with some exploring in between. I am going to wait till later to do the daedric quests also.

I only finished the Oblivion main quest about 2 weeks before Skyrim came out, only did it because I knew I probably wouldnt go back to Olilvion for ages if at all.

As daft as it sounds, I generally stay away from the MQ as much as I can as there is so much other stuff to do and even though you can carry on after the MQ, I just think some of the magic would be gone knowing you had completed it.

Im not sure I will ever have a " what do I do now " moment as it takes me around 5 hours to do a dungeon as Im so busy being in awe of the scenery, objects etc.

Its so pretty.

Is anyone else seeing the real problem here? The main quest is too short...
If that is the only thing you do, then yes. It is short. But the game is open on purpose...they WANT you to go and do other things along with the main quest. Explore, do side-quests, do guild quests, track down dragons, find loot, buy a house, craft, fight baddies, etc.

I would suggest you go back and look at the suggestions here. And slow down and enjoy the game!

So was Oblivion's. Personally, I don't care; I wish they'd get rid of this "Main Quest" nonsense altogether.

Oh, absolutely it's about open-ended freedom. Nobody needs to tell me this. I've played the entire series and always had a blast. However, Bethesda really seemed to build up a lot of hype for the main quest and I'm finding it, for the first time in an Elder Scrolls game, interesting and fun. I don't want it to end too quickly, but I've only heard of how short and underwhelming it is in contradiction with what Bethesda always insinuated.

Goal number one: Become Archmage

19 hours played and I'm not even close to finishing the mage college questline. Most of it was spent working my way across the map and doing random side quests as I encounted them, not to mention gawking at the scenery. The only part of the main quest I've done is the intro sequence. Not bored at all.

Bored? No; I have no time to be bored. I have TONS of unfinished quests, side quests, and miscellaneous quests, and I've only been playing for 9 hours! Bored.. What nonsense..

Also right now I'm pretty much focused on the Mage College quests, and doing some Companion quests on the side. I haven't even seen the Greybeards yet.

Play with a set of rules. Get proper goals and go through it, plan what you'll do each day.

To avoid feeling too overwhelmed or bored, I tend to play TES with a set of rules that says:

- No fast travel, unless its entirely justified due to poor game design (like if I'm in a city where there are no merchants and I really need to unload. In that case I can fast travel to the merchant and then immediately after fast travel back to where I was.). No fast travel for doing quests.

- I need to sleep sometime. No traveling at night unless night catches me while on the road and if it does I'll stop at the nearest inn.

- Only work on a few skill trees. No going for a jack of all trades-like character. If I'm a thief, I'm forbidden from spending any points on healing magic perks, for example.

- No chasing the main storyline only. I take my time with sidequests when I find them, the storyline simply being a containing story for all the other ones.

- Create a personality for your character and stick to it. My thief/assassin who loathes the empire, for example, isn't joining the imperial crusade anytime soon.

This actually allows me to have fun through many replays since two games won't be the same. Worked with Oblivion, and its working with Skyrim.

haha best. post. ever.

wow i had played the game for almost 20 hours and i am only lvl 13.. mostly hunting for dear and elk.. then making some armor and sell it... just purchased my self a house so now i am getting all the staff in my house... then will move on to side quests.... The game is all about enjoying the time you spend in Skyrim not playing this game like COD or any other 6 hour games... i played Oblivion for about 300 hours and i did not even finished the main quest and lots of side quest.. i think i only finished 50% of the game in 300 hours... so Enjoy the game! ))))

There's a subliminal thing going on for alot of people too. Which is also why alot of players avoid the main quest for as long as possible.

If you know there is a main story that you want to do simmering in the background, then all of those side quests are more engaging. You know that there is this overarching goal that you are striving for while you are engaged in the various side elements.

However, if you've finished the main quest, then those same side quests lose some of their allure for certain players because all of a sudden there is a sense of "what's the point?". Even for players who might not admit it (those who purposely hold off on the main quest basically are admitting this.)

It's very understandable that once that line is crossed, the same side activities seem to have a new found sense of "purposeless". They may be engaging in their own right, but without that overarching goal in the background, they lose their luster in a subtle, subliminal way.

I for one, love the freedom.

TES is definitely a love it or hate type of game series.

I agree with you veevito. I feel like that in every Bethesda game even the fallouts. Once I complete the main quest, I don't want to play anymore. So I avoid it and do everything else first. Eventually I will finish the MQ then take a break from the game. When I go back to the game, I make a new character and avoid the MQ all over again.

Dude, how did you even pull that off? D: I'm 12 hours in, one main quest mission done, not even remotely close to bored. <3

Dark Brotherhood and Companion quests are pretty great.
