How to make a good mage?

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 11:12 am

i've been playing a Rouge like character for a while now which is lvl 33 and now that i see others use magic i wanna do it aswell. What i wanna do though is make a Rouge mage which can enchant my stuff. So my questions are as follows:

1. Should i just go Magicka?
2. What armor should i use? Does it matter?
3. Could i mix sneaking around with a dagger do one hit and use spells in real fights?
4. How does enchanting work and does it have good synergy with some other skill?
5. What kind of spells should i focus on?

I'm open for any suggestions. I've played Morrowind and Oblivion but only beaten the latter and that was when it first got released and i dont remember much...

Thanks in advance!

1. Magicka is pretty fun
2. robes to start, you will need the magicka regeneration stats early in the game, but if you level enchanting you can put those bonuses on heavy armor. because there is no direct downside to casting in heavy - its the way to go.
3. sneaking is fine, but spell casting creates noise and it will alert others. because you are typically lightly armored, its best to start fights from range.
4. it adds magican enhancements to equipment. like reduced magicka cost for destruction spells, increase health, increase magicka, increase magicka regeneration rate, one handed weapons do X% more damage, etc so forth. it has no synergy perse.
5. what ever spells you think will be fun. you could summon pets to distract your enemies, or cast spells to have packs of enemies fight among themselves or you could just blow them all up with giant fireballs.

the difficulty is finding a fun way to meld all the separate aspects you want.

How to make a good mage: find a GREAT mage of the opposite six, dim the horn lamps, crack a bottle of Alto wine, get a bard to sing outside, and let nature take its course... ;-)

Seriously, I second what Nose Nuggets suggested.

Remember to buy an Elixir of Lasting Potency, otherwise said mage might be disappointed.

Ugh lame =P didn't read the part where you said rogue mage =P

...

Well here's some ideas for a summoner/mage type build anyway!

My suggestions for making an unstoppable mage:

1) Pick one element type and get the +50% damage perk for that type, also get all the mana reduction perks, also get impact. (I chose lightning, you can probably get more than one type, but i wasted some points in restoration/alteration, svcks for me =P)
2) Pick conjuration dual cast perk, also get all the mana reduction perks. (I also picked up the +Atronach strength perk, not going for the two atronachs at once perk though)
3) Get a companion and make sure you give them some good gear to wear.
4) Level enchanting! You can make some beastly items once you learn the enchants(from disenchanting magic items you find). Make sure you put some perks in enchanting, you can increase enchant effectiveness by 100% and make it so you can put TWO enchants on one item!
5) Wear robes of destruction (whatever the highest rank you can is) and a mage hood or helm with +mana or +manaregen.
6) Buy/Find/Enchant some jewelery and gloves and boots that reduces destruction costs or increases overall mana/manaregen.

Combat goes like this:
I see a baddie
I dual cast summon atronach (or dremora *grin*)
My companion and summon charge at the enemy
I select and proceed to pelt the enemies while they engage my companions

I haven't found a single encounter that was beyond my capabilities and I'm playing on expert. I was actually considering getting rid of my companion (Lydia) just so that combat would be a little more challenging.

Is it true you can summon a dremora? I have heard but never received confirmation.

you can make a stealthy mage character but it doesnt work so well, cuz all spells apart from some illusion ones reveal you, you cant use ranged "sniping" and investing in sneak and one handed going around assassinating people beats the point of being a caster aswell as the problem that spreading your invested skills (more than 4 actually) makes you weak for a big part of the game.

1) at start yes, dump everything on megicka, if it doesnt affect your roleplay pleasure, also choose high elves as race (they have +50 magicka wich is alot and a huge help in the early game, aswell as a power that regens your mana very fast even in combat for a minute))
2) yes it matters, all armors have pros and cons, but if you are playing a pure caster, full cloth + alteration is too good to pass out.
3) asnwered above
4) enchanting is the most powerfull crafting in the game, you basicaly can put more and stronger enchants and customize your gameplay, as a mage, your mana pool will be boosted imensely by it doesnt have or need synergy with anything really, its great on its own, for any character build but much more so for pure spell slingers.
5) for a pure and independant mage, stick to building up destruction as priority, and closely followed by alteration and restoration, once you get to a secure level with them (like 75 or so) you can start distributing a bit more to secondary schools like conjuring and illusion (tho conjuring is a big help if you dont like using companions you may considering droping restoration for conuration in that case)

some extra tips
>this is all relative to my max difficulty mage experience.<
-use the apropriate spells for their apropriate target and situations, for exemple use thunder against casters and frost against melee attackers, also be mindfull of target races and such, dont ude fire against dark elves, and use oposite schools of magic to your targets, like frost on fire atronachs etc.
-go to the college asap
-stick to the faction and tavern/city quests at start (those are character scale I think, and make for the apropriate chalenge and leveling), these are usually under the miscelaneous section.
-make good use of your mana pool, if you are finding yourself out of man midway through fights, downgrade your spells, its best to do less dmg, but constant than to do high dmg and then standing like a puppet, while dual casting can make awesome burst with a high level spell, dual casting is best used on downgraded spells, as you take MORE effect from less mana, this particulary more so considering misses.
-cant think of more stuff atm, its late >_<

I was watching a guy on Twitch.tv do it. I think he did it from a wand/staff...

Good answers above, but let me add an additional perspective. Don't rely on just Destruction and Restoration spamming, that will work for many contexts but not all, and besides I don't think it's very fun. What I do is Destruction, Restoration, Conjuration and Illusion. If I get a room full of mages I cast Fury on one, Calm on another, Fear on another and then my Atronachs slaughter whoever's left, one by one. It's far more manageable and hella fun than just spamming desto/resto. Also, I devote 80% to Magicka and 20% to Health for additional surviability. Getting the mana reduction perks has left me with plenty of mana and I like having the additional life, but 100% Magicka is fine, too.

I went with the above skills only and did not choose Alchemy or Enchanting because every non-combat skill that causes a level is one more level the NPCs will have against you. I don't know how the mobs are allocated skills, but I suspect few of them are working on Echanting, Smithing and Lockpicking ...

You don't need armor to be a good mage. The key is mobility. Keep moving. Don't just stand there when something comes at you in melee. In order to have enough magicka to mostly use spells, you'll need to put a lot of points in magicka and therefore won't have nearly as much health as a warrior type, so you can't take a lot of hits. The Mage Armor perks (Alteration) along with Alteration dual-casting will make your Oak/Stone/Ironflesh spells a lot more potent, so that helps.

Conjuration is your friend. Learn the summoning spells so your minion can distract the enemies and soak up damage.

Fury and Fear spells are also helpful. Fury if you see an enemy before he sees you, cast it on him from far away and wait around and mop up the survivors.

When you get powerful enough, the Cloak spells (Flame Cloak, Frost Cloak, Storm Cloak) are handy too. What's cool is that an enemy doesn't have to hit you for it to work, just has to be near you. So, if you have a Cloak on, especially fire cloak, you can just run up close to an enemy and run away before it hits you and watch him burn. The Rune spells are great too.

Bottom line, I think, is put lots of points in Magicka, a few in health, maybe a couple in stamina, learn to use as many spells as possible, and you'll be fine as a mage. I'm about level 20 now on Adept difficulty and haven't had any trouble at all, except maybe the first few fights with dragons, trolls and dwemer mechs. But now I can waste dragons, trolls, etc. using nothing but magic. It's nice to have some magicka potions in reserve.
