No. I haven't played Deus Ex, but I have heard that its main draw is that there are multiple ways to complete quests. In Arx, the only way to really get anywhere is to sneak around and avoid enemies, or hit them over the head with your weapon. I don't recall any dialog choices with the NPCs in Arx either.
You may not have many dialogue options but your actions can affect the flow of the game. It might not alter the main quest much, but the overall landscape can change in several important ways (such as with the goblins, and the situation the trolls are in).

Then again your actions in Deus Ex also had an effect. In some ways these were less dramatic as there really was only the main quest, but they still stood out.

It is so nice to see an Arx Fatalis forum here. I bought it when it came out and loved it after I got the hang of it. Trying to decide what skills to invest in was a big part of the fun of playing. I guess I will have to dust off my old Xbox and insert the game disc. I think I still have a game in progress on it.

Liches, Liches and more Liches, those things always gave me a lot of trouble.
Spoiler
They almost always Paralyze and kill me.

I played a more magic oriented character, so the way I dealt with liches was this.

Prepare the spells:
1. Paralyze
2. Drain magic
3. Whatever you want (fireball, etc.)

Pull out your sword and attack thusly.

First, activate drain magic, then charge up as fast as you can (before he can get a spell off), and hit him with paralyze. Stand next to him draining his magic while you prepare a few more spells (another paralyze and an incinerate or two).
Before you back off hit him with an incinerate, then back off (and hit him with fireball if you have it. He'll likely be out of magic at this point and will come after you in person. Charge up again and hit him with another paralyze. Stand by him and drain his magic then hit him with another incinerate.

That should usually do the trick.

Thanks Rindill. I'll have to try that. :D When they hit me with Paralyze I usually ended up dead.

More than the first game Arkane released, Arx Fatalis was the dream that founded the studio back in 1999. Almost ten years after its original release - in 2002 - we're proud to see that people from around the world keep playing it, some of them even calling it a classic.
Years ago I remember seeing ArxPak listed on a French website... I think it was the resource unpaker.

As its so common here that users love to mod the games... Is it possible that Arkane plans or might decide to release the map and resource tools for the game?

Wow, I was quite surprised to see Arx Faralis section on Bethesda forums. I have played the game briefly several years ago and I found it to be a very interesting game. I especially liked the magic system and I often mentioned it as an example of good magic system.
I wish you good luck with sequel (you are going to make it, are you? :)) and I look forward to it.

Since the game is so cheap on Steam, I might be buy it, but there's too little information about it floating around. So I have to ask, is the game linear and confined to mission after mission, or is it more sandbox-like?

It's more sandbox-like. You don't have to do a mission if you don't want to, there are many side quests, and stuff like that. Look http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1221852-arx-fatalis-faq-and-compendium/ for more information.

For me it's intuitive to see Arkane associated with Bethesda. It was in 2002 that screenshots & reviews for both Arx Fatalis and Morrowind persuaded me that my giving up on video games had been premature. Both games seemed dedicated to giving a rewarding & immersive roleplaying experience. Both games had flaws, but their achievements far outweighed them.

My primary gaming background has been in dice-rolling pen & paper "tabletop" RPGs, and so I deeply appreciated what both of these offerings brought to the table.

An "ARX 2" could be, dare I say, awesome.

It's been far too long since I played this game :( Got it four or five years back as a gift and played through it in one night. It always reminded me of some of the best parts of Morrowind and then you had the magic system. I truely miss that wonderful magic system. Also it gave me a new found love of shiny things which I still have to this day.
