Oh, wow. Arx Fatalis forums! Recently finished playing it not too long ago. Loved that game. One of the best I've ever played. The only problems I've really encountered was that when I downloaded the latest patch, it wouldn't let me run the game (said I needed to insert the correct disc?) and cheats weren't working for me (game got really hard at those super fast guys near the end of the game).

I tried this game a while ago and I just couldn't get used to the controls. It was rather difficult (though immersive) to draw runes with the mouse.
I think I'll try this game again, maybe I'll like it better this time. I remember at first I couldn't get into morrowind, planescape, VtM and even Deus Ex. All of them are my all time favourite games now. :)

Looks pretty cool! The background for this section of the forum is awesome too. I want to find it and make it my wallpaper. :D

I found the old big box  I had to make my own CD case cover because the disc only came in a paper sleeve.

I still have this great game installed on my computer. I bought it "I don't remember how many" years ago.

I spent way too much money on it buying a physical edition from ebay. Maybe $20? Anyway, it's a pretty "meh" game in my opinion. The magic system is intriguing in concept, but impracticable in execution. Combat was clunky and awkward (even more than Gothic 1's combat!), stealth was dodgy at best, and the crafting combos were extremely limited in scope. The plot was paper thin in many places, and it was easy to "break" a few of the game quests by thinking outside the box too much. No dialog options, no quest choices. Clunky armor/weapon repair system (one of those horrid "each time you repair it, the item actually gets worse" systems).

I've heard a lot of people drool over this game, and that's why I bought it. Well, I didn't find it to live up to the fan-hype. It was entertaining for a little while, mostly because it was interesting to compare the design decisions to contemporary games like Morrowind and Gothic 1. Arx is more like an action/adventure game; the only RPG elements are character skills and stats, and the ability to choose what weapons and armor to use. It just wasn't the game I thought it would be, and I really couldn't find enough redeeming characteristics to keep it: I traded it away.

Keep in mind, this is all just my opinion and my tastes, so don't get your feathers ruffled or your knickers in a knot.

Is this game the medieval fantasy equivalent of Deus Ex?

Wow I never heard of this game but I should check it out on YouTube! :foodndrink:

Wow it looks ALOT like Morrowind!
Never heard of it either but after a few minutes on youtube I think I would like it! It has the same Elder Scrolls thing with the player starting in a cell and Deus Ex′ thing where your character can speak for himself :D

I love games where you start out exploring your surroundings instead of directly bashing your head into the biggest battle ever

No. I haven't played Deus Ex, but I have heard that its main draw is that there are multiple ways to complete quests. In Arx, the only way to really get anywhere is to sneak around and avoid enemies, or hit them over the head with your weapon. I don't recall any dialog choices with the NPCs in Arx either.

A more accurate comparison is "a watered-down Gothic 1" or "watered-down Morrowind." Some people absolutely rave about this game, but objectively (as much as I can, I'm only human) I find that its contemporaries offer superior gameplay and RPG options.

That said, I think the most impressive thing was the crafting (cooking/baking) system, I enjoyed that part the most. Still, it turned out to be a bit limited in the long run.

The game is well crafted. Saying other games have superior RPG options is like saying a plane is better than a car because a plane has wings while a car only has wheels. Arx Fatalis set out to do what it wanted to do and it did it REALLY well. Comparing it to other games it was never supposed to be like is pointless.

*is confused* What are they doing with one of my favorite games?

The very first game I played was Ultima Underworld and it remains an all time favorite and personally I don't think it has been matched since. Then I got Ultima Underworld 2 and loved it. Then I heard that Arx Fatalis was the succesor in spirit to the Ultima Underworlds. I raced to get it.

A fantastic game, but one major disappointment for me was that you couldn't play a female character. That disappointed me so much as I only ever play as a female character.

You're afraid it's another game that doesn't live up to its fan hype? :hehe:

Sorry to read that. Not being able to play a female is a big negative for me also.

No, I just don't want to spend more money buying games until I start getting through my backlog of games I've already bought. :) I'm also not particularly fond of games with guns, I usually svck at fps games. I had Deus Ex for the PS2 but I couldn't get a hang of the controls very well.

My first experience with this game was in the Xbox. But at the time I was a little immature and just wanted another Morrowind. And yes, this game was very similar, but I think I ended up giving it on trade-in. I play it now and enjoy it a lot, as well as other Arkane games like Dark Messiah, which I absolutely love (the 360 version, but I think Id like the PC version more, since I have read you dont choose a class at the beginning).

Arx Fatalis and Morrowind are one of the few that can prove that PC to console ports CAN work in regards to the control scheme. The controls never felt weird to me, but then again, Im fairly open minded, unlike other people who just like to whine about everything and dont adapt.

Im just happy you guys at Arkane have a new home so you can continue making awesome games. If spiritual succesor of Arx Fatalis is in your future plans, that would be very welcome indeed (but please, keep the Dying Earth theme!).

Just FYI Arkane has little to do with the 360 version of Dark Messiah: it was developed in house by Ubisoft and the final game has little in common with the PC version Arkane developed. ;)

I will always remember the level-deep crypt in Arx. No other game has that atmosphere down there. Sends you real shivers down the spine.

It is so nice to see an Arx Fatalis forum here. I bought it when it came out and loved it after I got the hang of it. Trying to decide what skills to invest in was a big part of the fun of playing. I guess I will have to dust off my old Xbox and insert the game disc. I think I still have a game in progress on it.

Liches, Liches and more Liches, those things always gave me a lot of trouble.

Honestly, I had never heard of the game until Dishonored was announced, and the history of Arkane Studios was told in Game Informer. I remember coming today into the forums and seeing that a tab had been added for the game, and I just happened to pass by it in a gamestore.

Well, I bought it (that and Thief 2) for 1.90€ :P Sounds like a solid deal. Only time will tell if I'll like it.
