Shelving Skyrim for now, question to you gamers

Bioware lost me with KOTR (that's right, I'm the only person who hated that game - worst. immersion. ever.) but I'll give them ME 2 to get me back...
Oh boy, your going to love ME2s immersion, when you have proect lazerus and Jack wearing a belt bra into space... I mean [censored], even fallout 3 MZ had you wear a space suit.

Depends on what types of RPG's you like (well besides ES based ones). I'm going to be using the term RPG to describe a number of games that are probably more X than RPG, but have RPG elements in them..just as a forewarning.

Sacred 2
Diablo 2

Both good dungeon diving hack n slash RPGs that you can put 50+ hours into and be no where completed with the game (or be on your 2nd, 3rd run through cause different difficulties)..I have experienced that much playtime and more in both games. Only thing you have to watch out for is repetitiveness.

Dragon Age
Mass Effect 1/2
Jade Empire
KOTOR 1/2

All Bioware styled RPGs, meaning you have choices and a good bit of character emotional depth. Not really open worldy so you might not like it as much. But the stories in each of them are fairly compelling so I'd recommend them if you can get them cheap. Replay value for some is high, depends on you though. For me, they are 1 time only games. Hours in each vary. 30-50.

DnD based games
Neverwinter Nights
Icewind Dale (haven't played)
Number of action adventure RPG DnD games out there.

These games pretty much have a staple of RPG aspects in them, being they are based off the DnD rulings/worlds. I've played a few of the action adventure games and they're fun for a playthrough or more if you want to try out different characters. Neverwinter Nights is my favorite from this selection. NWN 2 is okay as well but not as good as NWN (and the expansions/community add-ons) is. You can get a good 40+ hours (at least I did) out of NWN, then importing your character to the expansions. It's a Bioware game so there's choice..but it's not as in depth as Bioware games are now. The game is more open worldy than Bioware games have been since, but it's still not really an open world. Still fun regardless, and replayability can be kinda high if you like trying out different types of character.

Morrowind
Fallout 3/ New Vegas

Morrowind, like someone said earlier is basically like Skyrim with bad combat and graphics..and a bunch of skills. But it has a lot (and I mean a lot!) of mods for it that can improve your game experience ten fold. The main quest isn't that compelling and neither are most of the side quests and the AI is nearly non existent compared to Skyrim but like I said..mods. If you liked Skyrim, Morrowind is worth a playthrough..even in vanilla mode. But you might get bored if you expect something completely like Skyrim. I know you said you don't like shooters, but FO 3 and NV are as close to an RPG you can get while being a shooter at the same time. They both play kinda like Skyrim does except in a different setting. Both are worth a play through at least.

There's also a number of other RPG's out there that I haven't played so can't really comment on..some examples:
Baldur's Gate
Gothic
Planescape: Torment.

Some that I have played but won't comment on either cause they're not that good or I haven't had much interest in them even if they are somewhat good..
Two Worlds 1/2
Divinity 2 (meaning to get back into this!)

And last but not least, there are always JRPG's and there's a large selection of those to choose from. A lot of them are linear though so if you are really fond of open world they might not be for you.

I love Sacred 2. It's somewhat different to what we've come to expect as Bethesda players, but it's a really nice game: lots of fun and good humour, but what really captivated me was its atmosphere. I love the very different feel you get with the different areas, but the whole vibe of the elven zone in particular, from the characters to the incidental music, is really special.

NWN2 has a really detailed character system, and there are about a million classes that have been added by modders. It is a good game if you upgrade the enemy AI. There is a really good mod for that which makes it much better than your average dungeon crawler AI.

Risen, Gothic 1-3, The Witcher 1-2, Fallout 1-2 and New Vegas, Planescape: Torment, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Arcanum, Icewind Dale 1-2....
I was pretty much going to post this exact same list. :P

You have probably played the Fallouts and the Dragon Ages . . . AND YOU BEST HAVE PLAYED MORROWIND . . .

Anyway, I would recommend Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga. Fun combat, good writing, and a lot of personality. I would also recommend Gothic/Risen series, though not everyone likes the feel of those games.

Mass Effects 1 and 2 are good but Mass Effect 2 is less of an RPG and more like a cover based third person shooter.

This. Picked it up on Steam since it was $10. Loving it so far.

In Skyrim, you do dragon shouts. In Divinity 2, you are the [censored] dragon. 'nuff said.

My game has absolutely zero bugs, no quest bugs at least.

I really just don't understand this seemingly childish foaming rage at Skyrim. I have had zero issues, my game runs smooth as butter, no lag, no freezing, never once froze and I had to reboot console, no quest bugs, zero texture glitches, absolutely flawless gameplay thus far. And I'm enjoying every hour (220 so far) of it.

What's the problem? I mean really, what's the actual problem? It just seems to me like people WANT something to go wrong with this game for you so you can come here to cry about it. And yes, I mean cry. The rage post on this forum of people "demanding" (lol) fixes from Bethesda are honestly so amusing I cry from laughter right back at you.

It's like watching someone drive a new car out of a dealership, breaks down 2 blocks down the road, and you're sitting there saying "Quit crying, you baby"

And then someone says "Yeah, modders will fix that".

I did have a longer reply typed out, but batteries died so to save typing it all up, im just going to say:

You are easily the most ignorant really devoted fan I have ever seen. Its nice to see what skyrim has dragged in, truely the forum is lucky to have you. Your post is pretty much "Its fine for me, stop complaining about the game you paid $60 for, not working". I mean, are you really this stupid or is this just you on the internet ?

Because people's "rage", isn't any worse than others blind love for the game, right? Do people not have the right to complain when they pay full retail for a game they are having issues with? Just because your game works, that doesn't mean other's don't have issues. You may love the game, but because of this, it seems you don't even take other people's thoughts into consideration. People aren't finding reasons to hate this game. They bought the game, expecting to have a good time, and whether or not they like the game for what it is, many, many people are running into bugs. The ps3 version is almost unplayable after a certain point. The 360 version, at certain times, can hit very low fps, which has happened to me at specific times. And the pc version, like all the other platforms, has it's fair share of game bugs as well. Hell, I haven't even downloaded the second patch, having heard that it messes the game up even more. I mean seriously, the game has issues.

Don't listen to anyone saying Gothic 3 is good. The combat is broken to the point theres no reasoning behind any move, swing or anything. It's as if combat is all guessing work.

I wanted that game to be good and I tried and I did as someone said and downloaded all the community patches and it was still complete [censored].

Avoid at all costs.

Just because you've experienced no problems, that doesn't mean that nobody has experienced them. I've been fortunate enough not to suffer too many problems from the game engine itself, but I don't doubt those who say they do; there have been quite a large number of quest bugs (most of which are well-documented) which are often fixable on the PC, but where console owners are SOL; I'd say that's a bit of a problem, personally. Then there's the irritations such as the clock going out of synch, the UI repeatedly failing to select the thing you clicked on and so forth. Overall, not a very polished experienced compared to most other games out there.

I actually liked Gothic 3 a lot. I will agree that the button-mashing approach to combat was not enjoyable and being repeatedly destroyed by very powerful mages even in later stages of the game was frustrating, but it was an interesting game, well-constructed with plenty to do and was also rather aesthetically pleasant, too. I think my main gripe is that the almost total absence of female characters gave it a slightly strange feeling considering it wasn't actually a war zone.

I love this game and it's a reason why I am so upset about the bugs. And it goes beyond the crash-to-desktop, blue screen of death, black screen "driver failed", and broken quests. The saved game bloat can literally render a saved game unplayable. This happened with Morrowind and Oblivion too, but at least there were USER-made mods that could fix that. There are no fixes for bloated save game files in Skyrim.
