Shelving Skyrim for now, question to you gamers

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:00 am

Since the latest word indicated that skyrim is not going to be fixed (assuming you can take their word for it) until late January, I'm shelving the game for now. Any recommendations for another RPG in the interim (while I wait for Kingdom of Amaldur)?

I've done Oblivion. What other RPGs would you recommend? I'm not much on action-shooters, I prefer the RPG pace more.

Dragon Age origins is an excellent RPG, not everyone likes it but its still great, Mass Effect 2 is another gem, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls both are great and brutal atmospheric RPGs...try out any one of them.

I have sadly done the same (Skyrim is such a great game, I'm pretty sad I happened to buy the version that doesn't work yet).

Morrowind may be too far of a graphics drop, but it is essentially Skyrim scaled back (VERY similar). So if you can handle the graphical difference then check it out.

I'm playing Red Dead Redemption right. Fallout 3 and New Vegas do involve shooting but they really feel like a classic RPG. VERY good games.

Dragonage is ok if you don't mind that hideous view.
ME 2 is actally very good
Demons Souls is hard but incredibly boring
Fallout 3 is good (I never had any major problems)
Fallout VG is pretty good (same as above)
Two Worlds 2 is good (if your eyes can take the blurring)
Sacred 2 is fun if you don't mind the top down view
White Knight Chronicles is dull as dishwater, avoid.

Edit: if you've not played Morrowind and your PC can run it (most will do so easily these days) I suggest you play that, Morrowind is superb indeed and 10x better than Oblivion ever was.

Deus Ex: HR is very good, in my opinion it's not quite as good as the original, but it's still great.

Mount & Blade is very good too.

Yes, and Skyrim seems to take the things I loved from Morrowind while trashing the stuff I hated from Oblivion. It's a perfect game if I can ever play it unimpeded as it is.

Myself I had my regrets with Deus Ex. Of my game library, what I would recommend without reservation is Mass Effect 1&2 and RDR.

Fallout new vegas. Open world, great characters, great rpg elements, just n amazing game. Now the version with all dlc is out.

Alpha protocol. Again great characters (Steven Heck is awesome), different approaces to situations, consiquences are amazing in this game. Great dialouge system. However it cn be buggy, I have only had it freeze twice, and one time Brayko got stuck (thank god). Bosses are a nightmare, so I advise getting "chainshot" for pistols. The game is underrated, and people overstate its flaws, like angy joe (he svcks), he shows you in his review, he has no clue how to play the game. Acting like its a damn TPS.

Dark souls is NOT an RPG. you can be a thief at the start, but damnit you wont be one at the end (or even by the halfway mark).

No it isnt. And Mass effect 1 is nothing like ME2, so if thats what your after, I advise you look elsewhere.

Reckoning will definitely be great, as to what you can play until then.

Dragon Age Origins
Fallout 3 (If you can deal with the bugs)
Fallout New Vegas

Unfortunately Microsoft owns the publishing rights to Mass Effect, so AFAIK it won't be out on PS3.

Personally I liked Skyrim and feel it's the non-buggiest BGS game ever but I can see especially PS3 players having issues and bugs are very random from disc to disc.

I'd probably suggest the classics from Ultima Underworld to Fallout 1/2, Wasteland, Bard's Tale 1, maybe Chrono Trigger, Deus Ex, there's the recently released and well done Deus Ex: Human Revolution I'd recommend if you want a modern title to play,

TES 2: Daggerfall is also worth a play and is available nowadays free from Bethesda's website with DOSBox to play.

I wasn't a fan of the Witcher 2 but that's also available.

For a non-RPG title I've enjoyed Super Meat Boy, Arkham City, Assassin's Creed Revelations, there's a bunch more you've probably heard of.

Rounding it out on the slim chance you haven't played it: Red Dead Redemption. In my opinion Rockstar San Diego zoomed past Rockstar North on that one.

As for Kingdom's of Amalur. I haven't held back that even with Salvatore and Ken Rolsten backing it seems like a fairly clunky and uninspired RPG. No I don't think it's like Fable but it's funny that it gets some random "hardcoe RPG" cred when it shares the same number of basic RPG mechanics as Skyrim. It's worth a look but for just the sake of comparison for now Skyrim seems better with the limited time I've spent playing Skyrim while simultaneously following Amalur very closely. Could be because I'm not a fan of Rolsten the name weight doesn't suddenly get me a good bias towards the game. But yeah for now Skyrim is one of the better releases alongside DX: Human Rev.

And that's from a huge RPG fan and former part-time dev that despised BGS for first Morrowind then especially Fallout 3.

I recommend:
- Gothic 3 (but you must make sure you get all community patches). This is an open world rpg
- Gothic 2 (if graphics do not bother you). This is (suprise :D) also an open world rpg, I think it is better than Gothic 3

How could I forget. Yeah the Gothic games are relatively good to play. I can't speak for 3 because I haven't played it yet but generally the biggest downfall has been clunky UI and controls that somehow get defended.

The UI of gothic 2 is indeed horrible :(
But I find the combat, once you get used to it, actually quite enjoyable.

New Vegas is great, RPG style and you can play it as slow as you like. I'll be heading back to the Mojave when I get my new PS3. Mass Effect 2 is a little more hectic, at least the combat missions are, anyway. Very fast paced indeed. However, ME2 on the PS3 is quite possibly the most polished, complete, and awesome game that I've seen on that platform.

Both great games.

Ego Draconis (a.k.a Divinity 2 and Dragon Knight Saga--thought the latter has been "rebalanced" and includes some DLC, so is probably the better option) is a really nice little game. The only real complaints I've heard are people who don't like that era of Gamebryo graphics, but if Oblivion and Gothic 3 are visually unproblematic, I'd strongly recommend it.

(Hopefully that makes sense; I'm extremely tired and seem to be making more typos than not.)

I played Mass effect 2 and the bought ME1 so I could make the desisions that effect the game, then play 2 again so I am ready for the release of the third in March.
OT: I highly recommend all mass effect games.

So...check this out, ok, I'm having no problems with Skyrim (70 hours, 9.7 MB save - side quest junkie, done a lot except civil war/main quest) but because I'm spending holidays alone, I was worried what happens if lag hits - so I downloaded Oblivion GOTY for my girlfriend's laptop and thought I'd reply (I never did the add ons).

Guess what? Her duo core laptop doesn't play well, and it's...wait for it...TOO LAGGY TO PLAY.

$25 wasted - I wish Oblivion could be run better on the newer duo processors, her laptop is way more powerful than the original desktop I played it through when I bought it opening day. I'm grumpy.

So - I'm going to buy either Mass Effect 2 or Fallout: New Vegas today to be my Skyrim Holiday backup. (To be fair, I also have Dragon Age (never really got going in it), LA Noire, and Gothic 1...oh, and Ultima IV to play if I want.)

You know, I've said many times Morrowind is simply the greatest RPG ever - a work of unparalleled freedom or art, the only game where I've felt like I was truly IN a fantasy world with so much to explore and like playing a pen and paper RPG. Skyrim is much closer to that than Oblivion, but there's still a few things I miss (mysticism, faction rankings, speed (bring it back, it really is fun to have chars and monsters with different speeds! and of course being able to design your own spells, and the much more involved enchanting system) but the one thing Skyrim has that Morrowind doesn't is some of the absolute best set pieces ever. ever. ever. ever. Some of the smallest quests feature the nicest touches.

Bioware lost me with KOTR (that's right, I'm the only person who hated that game - worst. immersion. ever.) but I'll give them ME 2 to get me back...

*sigh* I'm 38 and I still love CRPGs.
