actually i was talking about being an rpg, you are playing a role in the forums, and there is some sort of advancement system, it might not be 100% rpg, but it does seem to have the aspects you need to make an rpg.
This is a forum, not an RPG. The majority of people on these forums play RPG's, we know what they are really like and it is definitely not this. It is a good observation, but as I said before it is an argument that can be used on anything, not just this forum.

'Life is the only true RPG.'

By the way, you're looking for meaning where there's none to be found. Life isn't a game, neither are discussions, no matter how fun they are.

life is a game, we are all making decision based on being rewarded, that's what games are all about, completing an obstacle to be rewarded at the end, we are all also playing a role because we are machines, we are not really alive, we are just playing a role.

Games imitate life, not the other way around. You may play a role, but I personally live as myself. I like myself and wouldn't want to be anyone else to other people. It's not a role I take, but what I've become.

Edit - 1000th post. 2 stars. Woohoo!

I'd argue that most people don't have enough control over their "real" lives for it to warrant being an RPG. But I think there is a lot more choice online. I choose avatars, screen names, and where I choose to make myself known. But then saying that, we all play a role IRL - whether it's that of a friend, brother, sister, son, daughter, mother, father, husband, wife, boss, employee, patient etc. That's not to say any of those roles are lies, just that we do act out a different part of our personalities depending on the context (is that Goffman?).
Maybe it's just that when participating online, we get to choose the context.

yea, i guess it would make more sense if we were connected to another life like the matrix, but i'm not so sure that that's the case.

I'm not sure where you're coming from with that (forgive me, it's late and I've been drinking ). Could you explain what you mean about being connected to another life like in The Matrix?

in the movie "the matrix" they connected them selfs into the matrix by plugging a huge cable in the back of their heads, and the matrix world could be considered as another life.

It's just a forum tracking thing. shows who is posting alot. Set up as an amusing aside to people who have played elder scrolls. Not really role play. Guess you could role play a poster. But that begs the question why???

I use the enchantment on my +4 Turtleneck of Reasoning to attack you with a thoroughly researched and logical argument.

I suppose that makes sense. We log in, choose our avatars (in their cases, badasses in trench coats and sunglasses) and attempt to put out best foot forward. But I can still choose where I visit online, where I comment, what I encounter, and probably most importantly here - what other people see of me. IRL, I need to act out certain parts of my personality as befitting the context of the interaction (e.g. I will act a very different way when interacting with a doctor as I would when talking to my Mum). Online, I get to choose both how and where I interact with people, and to a large degree, what kind of people I will come into contact with.
I'd argue that while we play a role in most social situations, online interaction is different in that I'm offered anonymity and the chance to edit my normal spontaneous reactions in a way that you don't necessarily have a chance to IRL, making it more of a self-manufactured role playing experience than the type of role playing you'd experience in day-to-day interactions.

No, normally people post because they have something to say. The people who play this "game" you're talking about are called spammers.
