For those of you who don't like Quest Targets

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 7:19 pm

Pete Hines a while ago stated that you can disable quest targets. In the leaked footage we saw that a tiny quest target is over the top of the NPC that you need to follow. Some people might dislike this (I personally didn't care). Now, those of you who wonder "How will I know where to go if I happen to look away and the NPC has run off?" Well if you pay attention to the footage when Dovahkiin walked towards the spiders the NPC said "You are going the wrong way, that is a dead end" or whatever. So we will have audio confirmation of direction which will help. It is subtle but nice.

I think I am able to remember who I am supposed to be following without a ruddy great immersion-breaking diamond over their head. I have a better attention span than a goldfish. Also, if the game is be who you want and do what you want, I would bloomin well hope that it's not going to break the game if I decide to explore a side passage, ignoring the cries that I am going the wrong way.

of course it isn't going to break the game. I only noticed that some people hate the feature and that the NPCs that you follow or that follow you give directions verbally regardless if you have the quest targets turned on or off. I like the fact that they talk to you like a companion would.

Well talking is always good - but I managed to play cRPGs for 20 years without quest markers over NPC's heads and without them telling me what to do, and I am pretty sure I will turn off the silly marker AND probably ignore the verbal directions they are giving me - I'm not keen on being herded through a dungeon (or quest) like a lost sheep.

Edit to add - it must seem amazing to some that people ever managed to get through a game before voice acting and quest markers, both of which are fairly recent developments (at least relatively speaking compared to the length of time I have been playing games), but you know somehow we always managed to work it out and enjoy a game without either. :)
