Will there be an HD texture pack?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 4:14 am

I think its safe to say the textures in this game are not that great. Some are just plain bad.

I heard a rumor that the PC may be getting an HD texture pack soon. Is this true or just a rumor?

At the current state I think most people are interested in a game patch than a texture update :P

JC said they might put together a high quality texture pack for a few choice areas if the community wants it. Nothing has been said about a texture pack for the entire game because that would be like 100GB

Tired of hearing this [censored] spouted. Crysis 2: 12GB, looks far better than RAGE. The Witcher 2: 17GB, looks INFINITELY better than RAGE. You don't have to make a game huge to have it look good. ATM RAGE looks more like a re-release of Perfect Dark than anything released this generation.

The way megatextures work make the files much larger. The games you stated have higher quality textures but they are tiled, so the same ones are repeated. RAGE on the other hand has no tiling and completely unique textures throughout the world.

See I don't understand people complaining about the graphics... and them being muddy... are you guys enabling GPU Transcoding?

The game looks amazing when I turn that on. I can't imagine making it HD... i'm all for it though :)

Obviously this isn't an official 'id' reply or post, but I think it should explain why the answer will be 'No."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcoding

You can enable it via the Video Options (at the bottom)

I think the better question is, Dear id, HOW do I make my RAGE look like all of your promo videos, because it runs great and looks great - I don't see texture popping, and I don't see crappy textures that 'phase' into focus as you approach - I also don't see "green lighting" nor do I see GL-Quake-like textures on objects... THX id!

Ah, but according to Wikipedia's entry on Rage:

"At QuakeCon 2011, Carmack mentioned a number of additions PC version of RAGE might receive in the forseeable future. These include unofficial patches as Carmacks named them "research engine things, "far-out technologies"; such as HMD support, Kinect support, "tracing, splatting, voxels and non-polygonal stuff", "perfect motion-blur" and "perfect anti-aliasing". id Software is committed to update the id Tech 5 engine past Rage's development.

During the Keynote, Carmack also stressed a number of times that the PC version would possibly get a "super quality texture pack" to fix low-resolution(blurry) textures that Rage suffers at the shipping dataset which is identical to console counterparts. He admitted that artists were sad because a combination of multiple professional compression solutions necessary to fit the ~150 GB internal build to a shippable product of 25 GB, on three dual-layer DVDs or one single-layer BD."

Aye - I also read (somewhere Grrr links!) that they will be utilizing Tech 5 on Rage2 and Doom4, of course that's not a guarantee, some off the wall site mentioned "Tech 6" but I think that was a blogger, can't remember for sure, I saw the other nods on IGN or something.
