Do I really need to worry about what class I start with?

Hi All,

I played Oblivion for 30hrs or so, enjoyed a lot of it's elements but drifted away to different games in the end. I like freedom but I like a good story too and for me Oblivion's wasn't that great?!

Anyway after reading the stellar reviews for Skyrim I thought I'd give the Elder Scrolls another go and I must say 4ish hours in and I'm loving it :)

My concerns are that I've checked a few forums / videos etc and people are saying if you want to be this style character start with this race etc. I thought it didn't matter? I went with the imperial as I wanted to be an outcast in the Nord's world, plus extra coin and some speech perks seemed cool as I love the trading and conversation etc. But in terms of fighting style I wanted to just play around, though I've started to become a sneaky bow attacker that changes to dual magic at close range. I'm like a mix between robin hood and the emperor lol.. Will this still be viable option even at high levels as people have said the imperial is best suited as a warrior??

I need to make a decision as I may start again if that's the case... I like my Robin Palpatine :)

Any advise would be great..

Thanks

It makes pretty much no difference. The skill bonuses you start with are pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Powers or resists can be useful, but beyond that, play what you like.

Pick the race you like. The only thing race affects is the racial ability and starting skill stats. They aren't that big of a deal. Go make your heavy armor khajit and your mage orc, no one can stop you.

I'm playing a Reguard mage and I'm level 52. Its amazing and fun to play.

Redguards, just for the record are pretty much meant for melee. I had like a shamany Reduguard concept going in and just ignored the racial bonus stuff. It is completely fine.

Considering you can get all skills to 100, no it does not matter. The perks make a fairly big difference of course and you are limited on how many of them you can have but you can just not choose any and let them sit a while as you figure out where you want to go.

Nah, it doesn't really matter. It seemed to matter more in Oblivion.

Wicked I'll keep sneaking around and electrocuting people then!!

Good point on the perks I may start storing them up as I feel my way into it. With the build I'm going for should I focus on levelling Magic and health or should I get stamina up too? There have been times when I've had to switch to sword and shield is it viable to get all of them to good standard even at high levels?

Or should I stick totally to my Robin Palpatine build for best effect??

If you want my advice, don't go for a jack of all trades character on your first playthrough, because it will hurt replayability.

If it is viable to do so I may play it like that? I get what you are saying though, if I invest 100+ hours into this game I don't think I'll play it again! To many great games out in the world right now.

Never say never but I doubt I will.

I was watching a new interview on XBL, most people probably haven't seen it yet cause you know, there busy playing the game now ^_^ but they said the game was built on the idea that you can switch classes whenever you want, but the only thing that kind of ruins that is the perks, you can't reset them so choose carefully or save all your points for later when you decide which playstyle you really want to use.

You mean besides your race.. and your perks.

There are builds more than ever in TES with Skyrim. If you can't decide what you want to be OP, then try a bit of everything before you start spending perks.
