Rumored Valve Console discussion

What if... games you buy on their new console, and you get access to the game both on the console AND on your PC's Steam. Great idea or what? I bet one cookie this is what's going to happen if they ever do release a console or something similar.

You will, because it's all the same Steam account and the console runs PC software.

I would honestly buy it... I'm not against another console entering the competition.

Good.... I might even get one of these "boxes" if it were ever to be released then. But then again, it looks like a sideways computer, so I question which I should get: one of those cords to plug-in my computer to a TV or this Steam Box? Perhaps neither.....

I'm guessing it'd be purely digital downloads then? Could be interesting. I wouldn't buy one though but I could see why a console user would want it over the next xbox or playstation.

Why do they call it a console? It's a pre-built PC, using standard PC parts, and a Windows operating system (I assume, since it can run other PC games).
They've never called it a console ;) Nothing is official at the moment, it's all just rumours and speculation.

Urgh. This would only end up leading to Origin consoles, Ubi consoles etc. as they'd all want to get in on it.

How do you ensure that people are buying Steam games?

Steam is two things, a shop and an unpleasant DRM. The two intertwine. Even more strongly with Steamworks.

Please Valve, just fade away.
 EA and Ubi aren't dumb enough to think that they can release a console and make profit.

It wouldn't use Windows, it would use some version of Steam that runs directly on the hardware.

Besides, I doubt very much that Valve are wanting to get into the hardware game but are rather developing this to be licensed to other hardware vendors. It's the next logical step for Steam.

How would it run Origin then?

Why can't we all just get along and not have any exclusive games??

oh ya... money...

I won't buy it. There are already plenty of consoles out there that I will get in the future, and Valve isn't my favorite company.

I'd be very interested in a pre built, made for HDTV, Controller compatible PC. I am complete tech noob, so something that would allow me to play PC games in an easy and accessible manner would be of great interest.
This.

I doubt that

If it wasn't running Windows then they'd have to port all their games over to a brand new system and the same applies to other developers. If it was running Windows then they could port it more easily and they'd be able to patch both systems at the same time (PC and this console), which sounds like something Valve would do.

From PC Gamer

“Yeah, of course it’s a big story and obviously, it doesn’t surprise me that you asked the question.” said Doug Lombardi, Vice President of Marketing at Valve, when quizzed about its existence.

“We’ve always been very public with wanting to play with biometric feedback and new input devices, and yeah we are playing around with that stuff. We do think we have an interesting idea there and we’re pushing in different directions with that.”

But does the Steam Box actually exist? Doug almost denied it: “But all that is a long way from Valve shipping a hardware device,” he said.
