Valve make a console? It'll be called Source Gamer 1. Then in a few months, we'll get Source gamer 2. Then we'll get news on a Source Gamer 3, that will never come to fruition.

It has been a long long time since we've had a company other than MS, and Nintendo and Sony make a console. Not counting chicken-wuss SEGA, but I think Atari was the last.

I'm extremely doubtful they'll enter into the console market since it is extremely fierce. However, I will say that there is potential there if they can pull it off. Inter-meshing console gameplay with PC gamplay and player created content would go a long way in the console market.

This doesn't sound like a traditional console, which is fine by me. I'm not interested in one console to rule them all, but all of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft's various systems are really pushing it; I don't need another box in my entertainment center. As long as every game available on this Valve box is also on the big three's systems and/or PC then I couldn't care less what Valve does.

Hey, Sega fought valiantly. Why, I bet the Dreamcast was one bulky add-on away from whoopin' both Sony and Nintendo. :P

And I'm not just saying this because I was Sega kid.

I don't want another console, I'm tired of exclusives already.

PC. But even consoles steal some good games.

Gabe's already stated he doesn't want to enter the market, and that it would only happen if it absolutely had to. I believe him, too -- it's a really tough industry in which to survive. Just ask Sega.

I'm hoping a Half-life 3 comes out then I'll think of getting the console.

To be fair, they didn't know the the PS2 would destroy them(and even Nintendo to an extent) and completely DOMINATE the console industry and hell gaming for the matter. The Dreamcast is their masterpiece. There was big hopes for it, and I was proud to have one, and the games I owned for it(SoA, Grandia II, DOA2, PROJECT FREAKING JUSTICE, PSO ver 1 and 2). I don't even know how in the world the Xbox survived against Sony. I guess they have Morrowind to thank for that.

I think there was a year that they fired their entire Sonic Team staff.

I used to be a SEGA kid, but I now have a deep rooted hatred for them and that doesn't entirely lie with their getting out of the console market. That's not to say that I want them to stay as they are. I would LOVE to see them "revive" and "redeem" themselves, but it's not going to happen.

I predict that it'll put Onlive out of business.

Gaben could do it, and he would dominate it because he'd make everyone pay $ 400,000 to play for 12 seconds.

This is belived to be a prototype of the rumored device, from the twitter of http://www.valvesoftware.com/company/people.html.
http://twitter.com/#!/gregcoomer/media/slideshow?url=pic.twitter.com%2FuVdGOtZq

It's small device like the Mac Mini (not a monster machine by any means), and I wouldn't be surprised if there is a new upgraded version every year just like the Mac Mini too.

Personally I don't really see the point, I don't need a tiny Steam box, especially not when my current PC is already have more powerful hardware and can play the Steam games better. Also, there are relatively few games on my Steam library that would be nicer to play with a controller rather than with the mouse+keyboard combo. Recettear and The Last Remnant, and not that much else.

Eh, can't really say the idea interests me at all. I already have enough entertainment systems and once the consoles I have are no longer supported I don't plan on getting another one, I'll just stick to PC.

Halo was the reason we have Xboxs today.
The PS2 had a family, house, mondeo, while the Xbox was a bum with a solid gold ferrari signed by jesus.

I'd buy it, but only if they call it The Steam Engine.

MS did what MS always does: dump the revenue of Microsoft Office and Windows into it until it is a forced standard and accepted by many. The Xbox was never a profitable platform, they only turned a profit on gaming with the 360.

Looks like they're basically planning a pre-built HTPC, probably to coincide with the launch of the Big Box mode on Steam.

Looks pretty cool, if the price is good, I might buy one, I'm running out of gaming juice on my PC.

To clarify, from the http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/2/2840932/exclusive-valve-steam-box-gaming-console instead of a regurgitator

1. Valve isn't making a console

2. Valve seems to be in the works for creating a standard baseline that any interested company can implement

3. On top of this, valve is licensing (their words, which is odd because then they compare it to Android which has no licensing fees) software that will run on top of this. Probably almost all of this will be UI-based and maybe a few performance tweaks.

4. The hardware is an intel i7, 8 GB RAM, and a Nvidia GPU

5. It'll be compatible with PC games, meaning it'll run Windows.

So, all-in-all, this won't be priced in the same tier as standard consoles. It also seems like this is a "sticker" approach, which, once someone's adopted the standardized hardware and applies the licensed software, you get to slap a sticker on it claiming it to be a Steam box.

Haha, I really hope they do make a console then they can apply their brand of awesomeness to console gamers.

So it's not much different than any other pre-built PC then, which all come with HDMI ports these days so it's not like you need a "Steam Box" for a console-like PC experience.

So basically it's a pre-built PC with Steam installed on it? :P

It'll probably have a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10-foot_user_interface catered for gaming on an HDTV, but otherwise, yeah.
