Severe Chopping at start

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 8:32 am

Ok folks, I'm going to give you a heads up, I'm not computer savvy at all, terminology is lost on me and so forth, so please be gentle. I'll descrbe whats happening as best as I can, and maybe someone can help me at least with what to look at to fix the problem. I can get passed the starting video with the asteroid, and as soon as the words start to load when the video ends its a brief moment of sound, then pause, then moment of sound then pause again, each time adding a tiny bit more of the text that I assume is being displayed as if it were being typed, sadly, I cant really tell that right now, lol. So any help at all would be great, and thanks ahead of time.

I had this exact same problem and tried a bunch of different fixes, but only one actually worked for me. You'll still have a few issues, but the game should go from unplayable to playable.

This only works if you're using an ATI card which I imagine you do if you're having these issues. The short version is below if you're a little more computer savvy than this.

Hit Start : Computer : and open up your C: drive

Open the file called 'Users'

Then open the file that has the same name as your computer. If your not sure what your name is you can hit start and go to switch users and it should show you your login name.

Then open the file AppData, then open Local, then open ATI, then open ACE

From there you should see a file called 'Profiles'

Right click on it, scroll down to Open with and choose Notepad.

You can press 'Ctrl' 'F' to bring up the Find function and type in Catalyst.

You're looking for a line that says:

Change Enable to Disable so it looks like this:

Save it and close it. Then right click on 'Profiles' again, go to Properties and click Read-Only near the bottom.

Reboot your machine and you should be good to go.

Short Version

Go to C:\Users\'insert cpu name here'\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles

Open it up with notepad and change to

Change the Profiles to Read-Only, reboot and cross your fingers.

What's in the Users folder? You should see a folder with the same name as your computer. Whatever name you use to log in with.

Oh, I'm sorry, i meant nothing that says appdata in the user name folder itself, so it's users\mike\ and then no appdata

Depending on your version of Windows, you need to http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=show+hidden+files&qscrl=1. After you've done that, double click the AppData folder and create a new folder (rightclick, New, Folder) and name it "id Software" without the quotes. Double click on your new folder and inside that folder, create a new folder and name it "Rage" without the quotes. Try starting the game again and let us know how it works out.

B TW, did you get Rage thru Steam?

I used the fix in this post and it fixed the problem I was having. When playing, everything looked awesome. However, every 10 seconds or so the game would freeze for a couple seconds. Now, it runs smooth as silk ..... only problem is the game looks like crap. I have the black boxes and flickering all over the place. Anything I can do for that?

Sounds like you guys have the same thing as what I do now, I've got it to run smooth, kind of, but I've got the boxes everywhere. This is really feeble i think, I'm not one to complain about things online but we've all been trying to play a game thats touted as having some of the best graphics ever, an the best anyone can get is less of the black squares, Pretty blatant that the only thing that matters these days is how much you can make on release day, not how much respect you'll have when the day is over.

Here's to hoping a patch or driver is released today.

I am hoping they do something and get a new driver out too. It's this kind of stuff that makes me wary of ID in the first place.

But, I am having this same issue, and i've tried all the solutions i have run across with no result.
it's ridiculous. i paid 60 dollars for an opening cinematic and a paperweight so far.

You'll get those black box when you use latest rage update driver so don't. Instead revert back to 11.8 driver. You get much worse framerate but at least it's playable for me.

Put this atioglxx.dll in your rage folder(you must unrar it first)and try it.
This is from 11.8 driver so you don't have to uninstall current driver you're using.
Game will automatically find it and use it, regardless of which version of atioglxx.dll you have in your system folder.
Btw you must disable Catalyst ai first.

Goodluck.
