Elder Scrolls Online will eventually be free-to-play - anoly

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:45 am

ZeniMax will launch http://www.gamespot.com/the-elder-scrolls-online/platform/pc/ with a monthly paid subscription model, but will in time transition the title to free-to-play, according to Nicholas Lovell, founder of game consultancy firm Gamesbrief.

So how much does the founder of a game consultancy group get paid to make obvious statements?

True, but predicting the increased prevalence of F2P gaming hardly takes a supercomputer. Before 2004 almost all MMOs had a subscription service. Mid-decade there were several years where tons of MMOs were released and promptly died, a combination of the market being glutted, games being backed by studios that were too small to support them, and WoW steamrolling the competition. During this time we see the rise of alternate revenue: some MMOs switch to being F2P, others only require that you pay for the game and expansions, and a few try a hand at real money in-game stores. Since the initial rise of these alternate methods they have continued to become more common. So it hardly takes a professional games anolyst to see that alternate methods are trending up and subscription services remain exclusive to a few major titles. The reason for this is also pretty clear: people don't want to pay for multiple MMO subscriptions are once, so a paid service requires stealing people away from an existing MMO or tapping into people who have already left.

This anolyst also didn't mention a time frame. I would have been far more impressed if this anolyst claimed that TESO would switch to F2P within a certain time frame if it launched with a subscription service. But I'll admit this is a catch-22: the more specific he is the less I'd trust him without seeing the data, but the more specific he is the more likely his data and process are worth protecting.

Oh I see, you're saying his anolysis isn't really anything anyone couldn't discern with a basic knowledge of market trends. Agreed, but as much as we can say that and know that, there will be many who call us out as laymen and self-proclaiming experts with no real knowledge. It is at least good to see a professional anolyst echoing many people's claims.

He didn't mention a time-frame. My prediction, for what it's worth: 6 months and it will be obvious that it should be F2P, 6 more months before it goes Freemium (LOTRO style).

Sigh. If this anolyst guy has it right, I guess I'll just have to wait until there isn't a subscription fee.

To start, why bethesda why?? But then i read into it and it started sounding interesting. I hope this isnt the way bethesda will go on tes 6 though.

I hope this (when it is f2p) wont be another pay to win game. Do we have a date for this?

Beth isn't the major developer; Zenimax Online Studios are.

I have a very good understanding of what an anolyst does. They can do excellent work, but I don't trust anything one says unless they back it up with their process and data.

This doesn't mean I reject his conclusion, just that I wouldn't put much weight in it unless he's going to share his decision process.

A look at his/hers decision process is hardly required. One can quite easily predict how things will unravel in this matter. Seeing how TESO doesn't have anything to offer to the MMO crowd - unlike Guild Wars 2 which will likely end up being its direct market contender, and is B2P - other than integrating its IP (TES) into a MMO framework, it is fairly reasonable to conclude the only option for ZOS is to forget about monthly subscriptions. Even if they go B2P they'll still have big trouble rivaling GW2.

I find it hard to believe we can make these sorts of conclusions given how little information has been released.

I'm hesitent to play any MMO that's not subscription based. They're normally pay 2 win and you end up paying more for them in the long run then you would if they were the standard $15 a month subscription games. $15 to unlock a dungeon? $20 for a new class? No thank you.

Also, TOR's got 1.2 million subscribers. That's not exactly struggling. I swear most of these "anolysts" are just pulling random stuff from their behinds. I mean TES:O will go f2p, because it's going to be a huge failure that will fail to attract a significant number of subscribers, but this anolyst doesn't really sound like he knows what he's talking about.

I guess I won't be playing TESO when it starts. Not because I'm cheap but because I've other priorities. Apparently, Zenimax Inc. think the "free to play" option is a state of failure that other mmos have adopted in order to bring more players or keep them from leaving. I guess they want to start like the big boys and see what happens. I'm having a blast in free to play LOTRO that perhaps in the near future I'll start buying some locked areas.

Good luck to ZOS and, please, don't make TESO cartoony.

I didn't think ZOS had announced whether there would be a subscription or not.
