How Patching Works

Wilco, are you playing the game on PS3? If so what is your save file size and how many hours has your profile played? I'm curious.

Yes I'm playing it on PS3. I have 26 hours in-game time, and my save is just over 8 MB. Had one weird random lockup because my system was too hot, but I haven't seen a single framerate problem as of yet. Maybe I have yet to trigger whatever causes the framerate problems, but most people who actually have problems seem to be encountering them long before now. Earlier this week a lot of people were actually swearing up and down that once your save file broke 5.3 MB (no idea where that figure even came from) it would become unplayable.

I also never had any framerate issues with Fallout or previous ES games. Maybe it's related to taking good care of my system - I regularly clean the system and the area around it and blast some compressed air through the fan to clean it out, in addition to consistently removing game and save data for stuff I don't play any more - or it may be because I don't ever overwrite old saves (I just make a new one every time and delete old ones) and don't allow the game to keep re-using its overwritten autosave. Maybe it's just totally random.

Whatever it is, I hope Bethesda figures it out and gets it patched.

Go north west of Morthal near the dog's cabin in the forest and walk/run around. Do this with a fresh new save file if you like and see the frame rate turn to [censored]. Now imagine what it's like for players with save files over 7mb.

I'm playing this game on ultra settings on an AMD X2 250 and an ATI HD4850 (an average PC from 2008) and the framerate is perfect, my PS3 which is one month old in comparison can't run the game anymore after 50 hours playtime. These people have had this problem game after game from gamesas and they are sick of it, hence the angry mob attitude. On top of this they are left without acknowledgement from gamesas which naturally creates conspiracy theories and over reactions caused by their misery andd ignorance. TBH I don't blame them.

I forgot to say, when you are in the forest slowly turn your camera and watch it chug. Make sure you're on an HDTV. Now jump on an average/old PC and watch the difference.

Make sure you're on an HDTV.

I've tested it on an SDTV with composite and component cables and it's just as bad. So along with a squished and near illegible experience you still get a slideshow despite the lower resolution/required fillrate. (it's gotta be a memory leak)

Oh yeah no doubt. I was just suggesting the HD to see the chug monster in all its glory :P

At your suggestion I wandered off to try that on my current file (which is already well past the 7 MB point). I will admit that the frame rate did drop enough that I actually could tell that it dropped, but that was about it. Overall it still ran just fine. As I've stated numerous times, I don't believe the framerate problem is specifically linked straight to the size of your save.

Yeah I did it to make sure that it wasn't some type of latency/scaling issue as a good CRT basically negates that from being a factor.

A good time to reiterate how many console players are playing Skyrim on an SDTV without any patch because their system isn't connected to the internet. Those poor sods have a perpetually broken game and their UI is being cut-off and they are suffering through tiny-text. :obliviongate:

edit: I actually do agree that the savefile size isn't the tell-all but due to it being a factor in previous Bethesda games, whether directly linked to a memory leak or not, I can definitely understand people pointing to it as a contributor.

Yeah I'm not sure what it's linked to, someone made a good post about the programming language differences between the xbox and ps3 and that the engine's native language is the same as the xbox's. I guess the guys at Bethesda will know and be trying to sort it out to stop the rage on these forums.

hate is akin to love people just love this game so much they expect the best performance/visuals of this game, it's a good thing try to post things that actually might help the patching process to be faster, it's good people want to post their opinions on here but if you don't have anything good to say don't say it at all
