Intel + ATI: Found a way to considerably increase framerate

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 4:37 am

Simply turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS!

I stumbled across this whilst updating my Gigabyte P55-UD4M motherboard. It asked me to turn off Hyperthreading to update the BIOS, which I did and once the update was done it was automatically back on again.

I tried RAGE and got the usual low framerate issues i'd been having since the UK Steam unlock (Friday) so the BIOS update itself didn't help, but then I thought I would try turning 'Multithreading' off and when I played RAGE again the framerate didn't dip below 35FPS

That might not sound great considering my PC specs but prior to this i'd been getting as low as 20 FPS whilst driving about. I used 'RadeonPro' to get the framerate comparison, and it's definately faster now (Though still not perfect)

Worth a try, let me know what sort of results you see. This is my spec below:

Intel i7 860 (2.8Ghz)
Gigabyte P55-UD4M (BIOS F11)
4GB 1600mhz RAM
AMD/ATI 6850 HD
Windows 7 64 bit
Catalyst 11.10 + RAGE hotfix
NO CONFIG FILE & NO LAUNCH COMMANDS.

Hopefully this isn't just a random occurance and might help other people out! Post your results below

It's risky if you don't know what you're doing.

But if anyone else can try this and see what results they could get I would be grateful, then I can tell if it's unique to my system or it might help other RAGE PC players who are frustrated with unreasonably low framerates.

You make a good point though

PLEASE ONLY TRY IF YOU FEEL CONFIDENT THAT YOU CAN CHANGE THE BIOS SETTING.

Shouldn't have to kill hyper threading just to play 1 game.

@DarkEyEink

Thanks for the link, all I did was download the Preview 2 drivers (Which I didn't have) and then install the rage hotfix over that and now (STILL with Hyperthreading disabled) it runs absolutely perfect.

No texture popping
60FPS constant (V-sync enabled)
All settings as high as can be from the meni

Note that I still am NOT using a config file or launch commands.

I may test it with Hyperthreading on next, but now I can get on and play the game and not worry about stuff like this! It's a completely different experience now.

This^

I feel the game is in alpha testing stage, when people have to tweak their hardware just to get it even close to being able to run (which should never have to happen anyway).

You are NOT going to hurt your computer my adjusting your BIOS! That is why you CAN access it!

Unless you "radically" change your voltage settings it IS safe for you to try adjustments...just research what you are doing.

you have an i7 and a beastly vid card. you shouldn't need to do anything at all, nevermind turning hyperthreading off......

I agree, I shouldn't have to but it worked, which is why I'm asking others with lower than expected framerates to try it and post their results.

This helped for me! :twirl:

Previously I was getting 25 FPS min and 40 FPS avg. This gave me around an extra 6 FPS average, which was noticeable and now just about playable.

My system:

CPU: i7 870
Memory: 8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz
GPU: AMD 6950 2GB (MSI Twin Frozr II)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H [F11 bios]
Disk: Plextor M2S SSD
OS: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
Driver: AMD Catalyst 11.10 Preview 2
Resolution: 2560x1440

As others have said, it's silly to have to do this, especially for me as I'm a big multitasker.

I have a very similar board to OP so it could be to do with that. Please post if you've tried this as it will be interesting to see others' results!

I installed the RAGE Hotfix driver over the 11.10 preview 2 driver after this and now have a constant 60fps, try that.

No launch options / No config files.

Just tried and it drops a couple of FPS for me compared to the Preview 2.

Our systems are similar and I'm on the same BIOS, driver, OS etc. So it's probably just to do with my card - perhaps something they've addressed in the driver works better for your card at the moment.

That's a real shame, as the game isn't much fun when the frame rate dips as it really has been designed to be played at 60fps.

Even with the hyperthreading fix, It still wasn't a great experience, but then it suddenly started working properly with the preview 2 drivers so I was able to enjoy it the way it's meant to be played.

Hope you get it sorted out though.
