Computer crashes randomly while playing RAGE

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:12 am

I'm not sure what the deal is - a driver conflict? I uninstalled the previous drivers - the BF3 Beta driver is the only one installed.
I have an Intel i7-930 @ 2,80ghz, 6GB DDR3 ram and a GTX480. The game runs great at a solid 60fps with everything maxed out.

When i got the game on release it first crashed at the beginning (where you get out the vault and the first enemy jumps you) - my entire computer crashed and rebooted.
I thought this might've been an overheating issue - the CPU/Memory usage/temp looked normal though - still, lots of dust, cleaned the case, game worked fine the second time around and i played it for a solid three hours.
I figured that might've been it.

Patch came out, booted up the game again. After another hour i reached the boss-fight in the Dead City (that huge ogre thing/rocket-launcher battle)
In the middle of the fight - poof - my computer crashed, rebooting it - again.
This is obviously very annoying and I'm really not sure what's causing it (I also don't have this problem with any other 'demanding' game by the way)

Should i wait for new drivers? Do more people have this issue?
Anyone have an idea?

Not even a BSOD. The power just falls out and the computer reboots right after.
It's like a short-circuit or emergency shut-off - but RAGE is the only game/program i have this issue with.

I got a BSOD playing RAGE before. Right after I shot an enemy in the head I got a USBPORT.sys bsod. That's the very first time I've ever seen that bsod, and I've seen A LOT of bsods.

It could be CPU overheating, use speedfan to keep an eye on the temperatures.

It's 700watt - should be enough.

And i'm monitoring my CPU temps - they're all in the normal zone. It's not a power/overheating issue.
As i said, RAGE is the only game crashing my computer, i can play Metro 2033 maxed out for example, which is a way more demanding game.

I can confirm I had this a lot too.

I have also had a lot of BSOD in NTFS.sys

I have also had lots of programs crash after I close Rage including Windows Plug and Play service.

This sounds almost like what happened to me that caused me to run a memory test as well as change around my drivers due to the driver constanly crashing. It drove me nuts cuz i thought for sure my pc had a hardware dieing when i stoped playing rage it stopped happening. Im almost wondering if the game has a memory leak because this certinly sounds like one.

It must be a memory leak in the video drivers caused by the game. Only drivers can cause the OS to crash.
