Cleric style play from DnD. Criticism wanted.

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 3:13 am

I was wondering if my idea of a cleric style play from DnD would be good ( Also abit curious if this is basicly the same as a spellsword in ES lore?)

Note: Still a work in progress.

Offensive: 1-hand weapons + Summons. Bound bow for ranged.
Defensive: Heavy armor and block.
Spells: Protective spells and healing spells only. (Buffer)
Stamina: Low investment (Focusing on heavily enchanted/smithing gear, not power attacks)
Magick: Moderate investment
Health: High investment

Block: Shield wall+Quick reflexes+Deflect arrows+Elemental Protection (8 perks)
Alteration: Medium perk investment
Restoration or destruction: based on which one has the absorb health spell.
Restoration chosen: Medium perk investment. Buffs + Im pretty sure absorb health spell will be here along with fortify skills and such.
Heavy armor: Full perk investment
Enchanting : Full perk investment.
1-hand weapons: Only for 100% damage (5 perks)
Smithing: Full perk investment.
Alchemy: Low perk investment.
Conjuration: Full investment.

Playstyle: You go for heavy armor with smithing, and heavily enchanted gear. You use your mana to buff yourself, combat control and to heal yourself. The idea is a character that may have low dps supported by summons, but has insane survivability. Your strategy is to wear out your opponenet and endure - rather than nuking the enemy down. Think of the Cleric as an "Religious Overlord/Commander" type of character. In the event that ranged weapons are needed because of cowardly enemies afraid to engage you face to face, you dont use a regular - but rather a bound bow.

Roleplay.

Dunmer male or Breton malefemale. (At this point considering Nord male also, but will most likely go Dunmer)
Vampire.
Worships Molag Bal.
Prefers maces/bludgeoning weapons.
Evil allignment.

Ideas or advice for changes/improvements on skills/perks appreciated to better optimize this style of play

Funnily enough I just made a cleric character for a dnd campaign. we had our first session of this campaign last week. Personally I would have restoration higher than alteration. Why is it you had alteration as a higher investment? That being said a evil cleric typically doesn't heal. If I remember correctly an evil cleric(unless neutral evil) uses negative energy spells. Which means life draining instead of healing. So destruction would be a must. Also clerics can use summons. Atronachs would seem to be a good demon type summon for a cleric.

Otherwise that seems like a very good build to make. I'm thinking of making a Paladin build.

Yeah. If you are going to be a evil cleric I may suggest Conjuration and climbing the zombie perk tree so you can raise undead minions. Take the sign of the ritual when you find it to summon more undead minions. This is what I am going to do on my second character anyway. All else will be the same as yours.

If you are going evil alignment you can go with summoning undead. Clerics make some of the best Necro's in DnD 3.5.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will ditch alchemy completely and lower the perk investment in 1-H to only grant the +100% damage, and pick up conjuration.

I thought absorb spells were restoration and not destruction? Is absorb health spells destruction, because if so I will switch resto for destro.

Not sure but I believe that as a vampire you will get some absorb health spell innate.

Kinda OT i guess in my own topic, but what deities will your Clerics worship?

Vampires got absorb spells in MW if i remember correctly, but im not sure if it was connected to restoration or destruction or what it was if anything. My Alzheimer strikes back :|

Very cool. I was gonna make a Breton Cleric of Arkay sometime after my Paladin and a few other D&D inspired concepts.

On a roleplaying note, would playing Dunmer VS Breton and male VS female make more sense when worshipping Molag Bal?

I would say Dunmer Male, though Breton would be a good option too. Male because Molag Bal is the very masculine god of ----, he even ---d Vivec once (ew).

You may be a bit of an atypical Dunmer however. Molag Bal normally likes to mess with the Dunmer and their Houses for kicks..

I may have confused absorb health for damage health.

pretty much any style of play will probably be effective in this game as long as you have some kind of offense.

This seems like a fun build. Why did you cross out restoration?

I dont know if restoration or destruction has the absorb health yet. I took the advice to go offensive self healing as im roleplaying evil. In DnD atleast evil clerics are more hostile/selfish and only care to heal themselves on others expense.

I will remove destruction and go restoration instead if resto has the spell.

Im kinda hoping restoration will have the absorb health though as the "buffer" style of play is more suited with restoration. The magicka regen perk in resto should also help when it comes to wearing heavy armor :)

A sad day, but according to other threads then the vampire channeled spell "absorb life" is destruction -.- I wonder if 100 skill in destro is enough to make it a powerfull heal or if perks are required.
