Forge MMO - First-Person, Real-time Combat PvP

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 4:45 pm

EDIT:

Owing to the controversy over TESO's not-quite-TES-like combat, I thought it relevant to point out an MMO that appears to implement a combat system more in line with recent TES titles.

The combat they're claiming is real time and playable in both first- and third-person. However, it's not your typical open-world PvE MMO, from the looks of things.

Does this sound at all like what some people would've liked to see - as regards combat mechanics, not the whole game design - in TESO?

This has nothing to do with TESO.

Ouch, UE3 is NOT a good engine for MMO development.

Unless its heavily instanced or a small over-world but it can be very limiting from an MMO standpoint.

That's the idea, it's based more on a map model (somewhere between Team Fortress 2 and BF3, I guess). What interests me is whether or not they can pull of combat, effectively in exactly the style TES does it, but online.

This has nothing to do with TESO.

I find the implementation of FP PvP combat in an MMO somewhat related, and in any event there's only one forum in which all posts go. I daresay it's one of the most discussed features of TESO. In any event this isn't a plug: I dislike most PvP - but it seems to be something worth watching, owing to the fact that the two complaints against FP RT combat were (1) PvP imbalance, and (2) latency. If a game can make it competitive and PvP-friendly online... well, I find that very interesting.

Should still be in off topic. This is a plug even if you didn't mean it.

Perhaps I'll rephrase it as an example of something that could've been done in TESO, like the endless player housing threads.

Seems to me like a spiritual successor to the game RUNE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5uj7naZi0w

What we mean by that is that while we will have a level system, it will not provide you any power benefit at all. The only reason it's even called a level system is for familiarity. You'll unlock access to new armor, new companion options, new abilities (and in some cases, upgraded visual effects for those abilities so your advancement through the system is quite obvious even in the thick of combat), but you'll never gain power from it. Because there is no power gap, the feeling that you have to rush to the end of the system just to compete isn't there.

This is interesting but quite contradictory.

Leveling up gains you access to new (better) armor and abilities, that's gaining power. No, it's not a "I'm level 5 so now I get +100 HP +5 STR," but considering now that I have reached level 5 I can equip that +5 STR +100 HP armor where a level 4 cannot... yeah, quite a contradictory statement.

once again, youre wrong, because you always are.

the new abilities will probably work simmilar how they do in Guild Wars 2 or the advancement in recent shooters such as tribes. That means alternatives, not flat out better stuff.

Indeed, I thought Tera was Cryengine for some reason, but it turns out you're right. It runs quite smoothly. Obviously the questing is rubbish, but the engine seems to work well enough.

Myes, it is built in the vein of a shooter or similar, so it's not likely to have much of a leveling system. But that isn't really the point - I have little interest in the overall game but it sounds like they might have some interesting ideas on how to create a first/third person melee combat game in real time, in an MMO that's viable with PvP. Hell, even outside of an MMO that's pretty interesting, considering the fact that TES isn't exactly polished to perfection with regards to its combat.

In short, any game that attempts proper first person combat in a swords/melee based universe is worth looking at.

I think DCUO did pretty amazing job. Its just SOE never bother to care. DCUO is under-rated IMHO.

Very interesting article and looks like the dev is very devoted in trying to differentiate themselves from the MMO norms. Wish them best of success
